He joined Glasgow Rangers in 1986 and returned to England with Oxford United in 1988. He missed just three games in eighteen months for them before Middlesbrough paid £250,000 to take him to Ayresome Park. He helped 'Boro reach the Premiership and returned 'home' for a £300,000 fee in July 1993. Since then he has been a regular in the side that has won two promotions and reached a major cup final. He started the 1998/99 season with a well deserved testimonial against Celtic at the Reebok and turn out of over 17,000 is proof of the popularity of this likeable professional. The signing of Ricardo Gardner, the form of Mike Whitlow and the return to the squad of Robbie Elliot have put Jimmy's postion under threat.
