SUNOCO
RACE OF CHAMPIONS MODIFIED TOUR EXPANDING INTO TWO REGIONS.
SIXTEEN RACES SLATED FOR THE 2003 TOUR
BINGHAMTON,
N.Y. The Sunoco Race of Champions Modified Tour will
make a major move forward for the upcoming 2003 season.
The tour will split into two regions (north and central) with
separate championships and point funds to be awarded in both.
An overall championship will also be tallied at seasons end.
The long anticipated 2003 Sunoco Race of Champions Modified
Tour has been released. For the first time ever the tour
will branch out into two distinct regions in the northeast.
Each region will host events that are within a close proximity
of each other. Separate championships and point funds
will be provided. Like the past, an overall championship
and point fund will also be awarded based on the regional
events and two final crossover races.
The north region will see events being held at Chemung
Speedrome, Holland Speedway, Lancaster Motorsports Park,
Oswego Speedway, Tioga Motorsports Park and Wyoming County
International. The central region will see events at
Chemung Speedrome, Mahoning Valley Speedway, Mountain
Speedway, Tioga Motorsports Park and Wall Township Speedway.
Chemung Speedrome and Tioga Motorsports Park are hosting
events in each region as geographically they are the cut off
point for each region. Two season ending crossover
events will determine the overall Sunoco Race of Champions
point race. The 53rd Annual Sunoco Race of Champions
(Oswego Speedway, September 20th) and the "U.S.
Open" (Lancaster Motorsports Park, September 28th) will
serve as the two crossover finales.
"We are absolutely thrilled about the prospects of
splitting the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified Tour into two
regions for 2003", commented tour director Andrew Harpell.
He added, "The track operators that are hosting events
this season are very encouraged with the plans that we have
laid out." Northeast Modified teams will be certain
to benefit as now they will have less travel time along with
individual and overall point funds.
The top ten in each region will receive point fund money with
the top teams in the overall standings also receiving a share
of a separate point fund. Entering the final crossover
events, each position in the individual regional standings
will be awarded similar points. For example, each
regional champion will enter the Sunoco Race of Champions
Modified 200 with the same number of points regardless of the
number of events in each region. The same will apply
from second place down as well. A driver may earn bonus
points by heat wins or by attending all fourteen events
leading up to the Sunoco Race of Champions 200. Five
bonus points will be awarded for heat wins and fifteen points
will be awarded to any team that attends all the events.
A driver can compete for both regional titles but can only
carry their highest individual point tally into the final two
races. Already a number of teams have indicated that
they will compete in both regions.
Further information on the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified
Tour will be forthcoming throughout the off-season. For
