It is at this time of the year that the Earth returns to life. The God and Goddess are reunited, symbolized by equal hours of light and darkness. This is the time of beginnings, when the Sun first steps foot into Aries, the sign of the infant. Mars is the planetary ruler of Aries, an ancient God who gives us the energy to initiate action, to take a first step, to boldly charge off in pursuit of our desires. Mars is also known as the “red planet.” His fondness for that color is evidenced by it’s appearance in nature during the spring, when flaming buds force themselves through the tips of tree branches toward the Sun, the giver of life. Christians celebrate Easter at this time, rejoicing in the resurrection of the son of their God. Regardless of our path, we can all creatively share in this festival of birth and fertility by indulging in the ancient ritual of egg- decoration, a wonderful way to symbolically honor the new life that surrounds us.
