Perhaps I was wrong about the young chief being good for the worn out tribe. A good way to deal with a woman screaming hysterically about her baby --you helped her make-- at your door is to pull her inside and hold her until she stops raging long enough to hear you. Most important also if you have a wife is to make it as small a scene as possible.

I hope he’s better at Kinging.

Gerard Hint 5:

"She likes the flowers. They smell nice, each one different. She told me that once years ago, not long after she came here. That was before they'd let her out regularly, back when Random was still in jail."

Random was in jail? They wouldn’t let Vialle out? Now that’s a story I’ll have to get from someone, but I could hardly ask him in the hall.

Gerard Hint 6:

“Vialle is from Rebma, which is an undersea kingdom near here--or it used to be anyway, before the Sundering. Now it's near Paris, where Corwin will be keeping house."

The blind man… wait, he grew them back. The man who grew his eyes back is keeping house in Paris. The underwater city is Rebma, and it must be important for the Queen to be from there.

Could we perhaps require big warriors to wear pink ribbons in their hair so I don’t say lame things like, “so… what brings you to the library?” It’s embarrassing, and best to be avoided. Instead, I could say, “nice ribbon.”

I’m too old for this. Oh, wait… I’m not.

Demons. Who wouldn’t be impressed? I think I should avoid him.

THE SECRET

Some things that fly there be, --
Birds, hours, the bumble-bee:
Of these no elegy.

Some things that stay there be, --
Grief, hills, eternity:
Nor this behooveth me.

There are, that resting, rise.
Can I expound the skies?
How still the riddle lies!

~~Emily Dickinson

That may be the only poem we ever memorized that stuck with me, and why? I didn’t know yet then that Emily also thought death was the secret you couldn’t know. The words are like a prophesy, here there are bees, a griffon, and time out of control, a sister’s grief, and the labyrinth of life. But things are much here like home, with no language to hide behind. The culture of fear and hiding is right out in the center of the library. Whispering, whispering, behind closed doors. They even know the trick of saying three things, one for each person, in one phrase.

It’s just like home, but lonely, because I can’t guess yet what’s being said for anyone else. It is as if… how still the riddle lies.

One of the properties of shadow is time. It can vary.

Martin is from Rebma too. I wonder if it is like the cousin tribe. I should ask someone…

Dragons! Flying, disappearing and reappearing, firebreathing… Dragons! I hope they never ever ever get hurt. Happy to watch them, would hate to have to treat one!

Nanotechnology is the science of manipulating materials on a molecular or atomic scale. Beyond cells. Manipulating things smaller than cells – and they have codes… and they explain everything. Wilson was right about Chromometric Chains – they aren’t only there- they MEAN something. Information, instructions, notes the gods left behind! It’s amazing. The applications, if we could figure out how to manipulate it – someone somewhere must know how already – it leaves me speechless.

Trumps are great! Better than dragons, even. Babies are better than trumps. I wonder what dragon babies... ah, no, I don't. Don't want to know.
