WEHO the series
Yeah, this is Amely. What do you want?
You want to know about WeHo, huh? Fine. It's a city shaped like a gun, eternally stuck between the elite of Beverly Hills and the dregs of Hollywood. Beautiful weather, beautiful people, and all the strangeness that that combo attracts. I should know. I live there.
Okay, there's a little more to West Hollywood than that. I'll paint you a picture.
BOYS TOWN
That's what the rest of Los Angeles calls it. I still haven't lived here long enough to figure out what the name is among the regulars. You see, I work as a waitress in the center of gay West Hollywood and I get to deal with the community's biggest characters. We've got Matt who's in such a hurry to find the real deal, he misses the fact that it's right in front of him. His dear, stable, and uptight friend Jeremy plies the legal trade while remaining in the closet about his HIV+ status. He just got out of a nasty relationship -- okay, after a year of being single, "just" is perhaps too strong a word -- so he's taking it slow. If I were paying attention, which I'm not, I'd say he was pining for someone close to him. Then there's Kyle, an actor/writer wannabe, who goes through relationships as quickly as he goes through jobs. He's got a big surprise in store for his friends, though, and it ain't gonna be pretty. I'll have a front row seat when the first firework explodes.
THE RUSSIANS
Technically, most of the Russians in West Hollywood are Jewish people from the Ukraine, but why split hairs? No one else does. The Russian community mostly lives in eastern West Hollywood, where, you guessed it, I have taken up residence. I learn way too much about the people in my building, including my incredibly pig-headed, cocky, stupid, yet somehow supportive, funny, and intelligent neighbor Pavel. He's opened his home to his party-girl sister Natasha, who is still trying to reconcile their Russian past with the American future she so wants to be a part of. Topping it off is young Lara, shy, sweet, studious, and totally besotted with Pavel. Lara is the perfect Russian girl who will become the perfect Russian wife. Not if I have anything to do with it. Course, she may have more to her than even I can predict.
THE SERIES
Oh yeah, there's me, too. I'm the girl who shows up one day on the doorstep of two communities, and, through no fault of my own, ends up uniting them. No one knows where I came from or where I'm going, and I like it that way. Could be that I don't know either, but you'll never get me to admit it. I'm along for the ride as these two groups of people wrestle with finding themselves, loving each other, and learning to care about and beyond the community they live in. That's WeHo.
THE PRODUCTION
A half-hour single camera dramedy, WEHO is produced and written by television veteran Anne Toole, who believes television has the power to simultaneously amuse, educate, and inspire, and not necessarily in that order. Chronicling the stories of seven residents of West Hollywood, the series' action also includes sound bite interviews of actual West Hollywood natives.
