The world is undergoing a major social and economic change because of new possibilities made possible by information technology. Over the past few years, libraries and information centres have been greatly affected by the changes in information technology and the rate of change is still accelerating rapidly.
The alarming rate through which information is being published and made available in digital as well as paper form has forced information professionals to adopt a different set of tools for information management. This information explosion and proliferation of documents has been posing problems for information management.
This is more so with social science information, which gets doubled for every seven years. User will be lost in this ocean of information unless he is assisted by professionals in exploring social science information.
Keeping this in view, the National Social Science Documentation Centre (NASSDOC), New Delhi and Tata Institute of Social Sciences at Mumbai are jointly organising a four day workshop in exploring social science information in digital environment.
The objective of this workshop is to provide participants sufficient exposure to these new alternatives of exploring Social Science information in digital environment.
The programme is lab oriented and provides on-hand training in information management. It will have contents as below: -
- Social Science Information;
- Social Science Information Centres and Networks
- Databases on CD-ROMS
- Internet and Social Science Information
- Search Tools and Techniques
- Major Social Science websites National and International
- Evaluation of digital information sources
The workshop methodology is participatory and consists of lectures by experts in the field, followed by hands-on-experience, presentations and finally discussion by the participants.
Participants may be the Social Scientists, Teachers, Research Scholars, Information intermediaries, Library and information Professionals in the fields of Social Sciences.
| Accommodation and Climate |
Accommodation arrangements can be made for outstation participants at TISS Guest House from 26-30 May, 2002 on first come first serve basis. Charges will be Rs. 100/- per person per day on twin sharing basis.
Climate of Mumbai in the month of May would be hot. The temperature is likely to be between 30 to 35 Degree Celsius. Light clothing is normally required during the period.
TISS LIBRARY
TISS Library stocks a rich collection of 98,000 volumes and subscribes to 300 learned journals in the discipline of Social Science and related areas. The Library is managed by highly dedicated team of professionals and offers a wide range of information services and products to its demanding clientele. UGC has identified this library as Document Delivery Centre for Social Science information which caters to the information needs of users across the country.
NASSDOC
NASSDOC is a National Information Centre in the area of social science established by ICSSR to support the quality research work. NASSDOC-ICSSR is organising short term training workshops for over 15 years. These training workshops provide an easy way to refine the information locating skills of information professionals, researchers in social science sector. Resource persons are experts in this area and of competence. These training courses are improved using feedback from the participants and the resource persons.
Rs. 1500/- per participant. This fee covers the cost of workshop kit containing training material, Internet Access time and working lunch including two tea during sessions. The fee is to be paid by Demand Draft in favour of Registrar, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Registration form duly filled in and accompanied by registration fee should reach the Workshop Director, by May 13th, 2002.
