The truth is that Hotaru is part cyborg (robot), and she wears black to cover herself. All this came about when she was watching her father conduct an experiment, along with other scientists. The experiment backfired, and everyone but Professor Tomoe was killed. When he saw Hotaru dead, he broke down into tears. Pharoah 90 appeared, and made a bargain with the professor. If he would restore Hotaru, the Pharoah will use Professor Tomoe as a host. He would do anything to let Hotaru live, so he took the bargain. Pharoah 90, now posing as the professor, began working with the Witches 5 (Eudial, Tellu, Viluy, Mimette, and the twins, Cyprine and Ptilol), and gathering pure heart crystals in his lab.
Hotaru (now Saturn) transports to Darien's apartment, where Reeny lies in bed, sick and weak. She tells Sailor Moon that she will undo what Mistress 9 did. Sailor Saturn destroys the world using her Silence Glaive and this leads to Hotaru's death and rebirth. Super Sailor Moon is able to contain the energy blast, and Hotaru was reborn, and given back to Professor Tomoe (who is now good).
Hotaru starts to rapidly grow throughout Sailor Moon Stars and is reawakened by Sailor Saturn's soul, who gives back all her memories from her past life. It is later known that Galaxia was the one to cause her to be revived, because she broke the seal for Neherenia and released her. This caused Hotaru to grow and regain her memories, so Galaxia could have her star seed. She gets her star seed taken away by the evil Neptune and Uranus, but she comes back. She grows until she looks about Chibi Usa's (Reeny's) age and starts fighting along with the rest of the senshi.
The Outer Senshi believed that if Saturn were to reawaken, the world would again be destroyed, so they set off to destroy Hotaru before Sailor Saturn's soul could awaken within her. Their mission still continues on to the present time.
Sailor Saturn first appeared during the end of the Silver Millenium. When Queen Metallia attacked the moon, the three talismans held by Pluto, Neptune and Uranus combined their energies, giving birth to "the final senshi": Sailor Saturn. She had the power to annihilate a hopeless realm, and the three outer scouts could do nothing as Saturn silenced the era of the moon. That's what Pluto, Neptune and Uranus were always talking about in SMS, that they had to keep the silence from coming.
Hotaru doesn't really have a love life, since she was very young at the start, and was reborn, and also considering that she's never around and she doesn't really have time for one, although I wouldn't mind if I could just make up a guy character for her!
During her time of growing, we learn that she is a genius and a child prodigy. She plays the violin very well, she can speak English, she reads Yeats' poems, and she seems to have mastered recreating the stimulation of the Big Bang ( theory that is believed to be the creation of the universe).
