Dreams of Tomorrow

Part 5

"You have to trust them!" For a moment Chris's plea echoes in your ears and then it is washed away in the flood of images that sweep you away.

[Jay, listen to us! Trust us!] John and Elizabeth urge. [You're breaking out. You have to relax, let your powers out. Imagine a fist unclenching, a galaxy exploding into space. Release your tension, Jay! Reach out to us! You're a tomorrow person, Jay, a person like us but you have to release your powers.]

For a moment you cling to these rocks in an ocean of faint minds.

[How?] You beg, accepting their help, putting all your trust in it. [How?]

[A flower blooming. A clenched fist unfurling. A seed germinating to full life. Release]

You seize the imagery and at the same time you know it is wrong for you. You're straining against the tide, holding onto these others. Do you trust them? With all your heart but nonetheless you know that they are wrong. You take a deep mental breath and release you grip.

[Jay!]

In a moment you're swept away from the minds reaching for yours. You sink into the ocean of murmured voices all too faint to distinguish. They wash around you, submerging you even as the others try to cast you a lifeline. You all but surrender hope as your old life fades from around you. But then it comes as you knew it would if you made this ultimate gesture of release. Rising from the depths like some great aquatic mammal your powers rise to meet you, to embrace you, to buoy you to the surface.

With a mental gasp, you break free of the ocean of thought, supported and shielded from the roar by the warm embrace of your own telepathic gifts.

John, Elizabeth and the others are watching, stunned by the vivid mindscape your imagination has spun around you. You feel them with the touch of one mind to another.

[Welcome, Jay] One of the younger Tomorrow People says softly.

[Welcome, Jay.] John echoes, and his voice is fading as exhaustion finally begins to overwhelm you. [Come to the Lab. Chris and Ginge will bring you.]

And then you're too tired to sustain the contact any longer and John and the others are gone.

"Jay? Jay, are you alright?" Chris's voice is sharp with anxiety as he shakes your shoulders. Ginge is behind him, also staring at you with fierce concern. You draw back from the strange men, the images you just experienced already begging to fade as your fear comes back. You remember the images that triggered your recent experience, the monsters in these men's minds. "Jay, it's alright. You've been breaking out is all. You'll be fine."

"I felt the others. They said I should come to the Lab." You admit.

Chris and Ginge exchange looks and Ginge moves to the door, cracking it open to glance outside.

"Coast is clear." He says. "Blimey, this reminds me how I got mixed up with this strange bunch in the first place."

You hesitate, still frightened and confused, still uncertain.
