Dreams of Tomorrow

Part 7

It didn't take you long to accept your new life as a Tomorrow Person. What at first seemed odd and full of uncertainty rapidly became the central truth of your life.

John and Elizabeth, Andrew and Hsui Tai explained about jaunting, about the Federation and the Trig and it all seemed so natural and so right. After all, you're a telepath and you can jaunt. What could be more unbelievable than that?

You've not told your parents yet -you've not quite dared - but at least your teachers haven't followed up their threat to talk to them. Three days into the new week at school, five since you broke out, the summer holiday coming soon and not a single crippling headache to draw unwelcome attention. You know that from here your life can only get better.

The other Tomorrow People are a strange bunch. John is authoritative but has a wickedly dry sense of humour and you know, from chance looks, from his gentle words that he cares deeply for all the other Tomorrow People. Liz and John seem particularly close, after all they've known each other the longest and are both much older than the two kids. It startled you at first to find the Elizabeth was a teacher but then you realised that her compassion makes her perfectly suited to the role. TIM fathers all the Tomorrow People, bullying even John into looking after himself. His rich voice has come to represent the comfort and hominess of the Lab to you now. Andrew and Hsui Tai seem like nice kids. Hsui Tai, you guess, is probably about the same age as you but her naivety and childlike delight in the world make her seem younger. You've heard by now how John and the now absent Mike saved Hsui Tai and brought her here to London and you can't help wondering if you would adjust so well to a cold and alien world. Andrew on the other hand is definitely younger than you and not above using his special powers to play the occasional childish prank. The young scots boy sometimes seems as innocent as Hsui Tai but then you see the gleam in his eye and realise that underneath the angelic exterior is a mischievous and rapidly maturing young man.

You're becoming accustomed to Chris and Ginge and his friend Lefty too. Ginge and Lefty have taken you out biking with their gang despite John's frowns. The exhilaration of that experience amazed you and now you're determined to get hold of a bike for yourself someday. Perhaps you can persuade John to buy one for you. After all, you are nearly sixteen and it's not as if he's short of a bob or two. If John can afford to fund the Lab and support Andrew and Hsui Tai on the income from his patented inventions he can certainly spare a bit of cash for you!

Chris has taken you to judo classes with him twice now, muttering something about how you shouldn't rely on your special powers to protect you. You've gone along gladly, trying to get the measure of this young man. Chris seems to see more of the Tomorrow People than Ginge does and he's very different from his brother. Chris is younger, keener and, though you hate to say it, probably a lot brainier than his older brother. He's told you about the various scrapes the others have got into over the years, elaborating on the dangers where the other Tomorrow People fall silent. He's very keen that you don't become too dependent on your special powers as the others have.

You've heard too about the other Tomorrow People no longer even on the Earth, Carol and Kenny, Stephen, Tricia, Tyso and Mike. Life on the Trig sounds fascinating and exhilarating but just for the moment you don't feel the need to visit such a distant place. Life on Earth looks like it's going to provide all the excitement you need!
