Part 41
"Alright." You tell John. But as he jaunts back to the Lab you jaunt instead to where the tanks and vats of chemicals are stored just inside the fence.
You hear John calling you but you can't spare the time to reply just now and you're not sure you can justify what you're doing even to yourself. You just know, somehow, that this is important. You know that if what they have in this place gets out then nothing will ever be the same again. You scramble up a ladder of pipes trying to find some kind of label to at least tell you what they have in them but you are distracted by the sound and sight of the two trucks rumbling out of the base. The Commander comes out of his office at a run, clearly startled, but the men weren't waiting for their commander's word with the volcano pulsing red against the black sky.
You turn your back on the ineffectual commander trying again to find out what's in the tanks. Even if he sees you now there is nothing he can do about it. And that's why you don't see the commander pull his pistol from it's holster.
And that's why you don't see the bullet that kills you.
