Boxhill and Westhumble Station, Surrey

Boxhill Station Buildings

In 'The Culex Experiment', Kevin encounters an insectile menace while cycling en route to meet Megabyte at the local railway station. Arriving at the station in haste, he collapses in a telephone box. He is abducted from there by two white clad figures.

The station in question was difficult to identify from evidence on screen. The station name boards are unreadable. However, the locomotive travelling through the station at the time is a Class 319 electric multiple unit - run by Southern Railways in the early to mid 1990s. It also shows the regional route number 84, which describes the route from central London to Dorking. The distinctive architecture of the two station buildings visible narrows down the location to one candidate - Boxhill and Westhumble station in Surrey, or simply 'Boxhill' as it was known at the time. Further investigations on the ground have confirmed this identification.

Boxhill station is notable for being the closest station to Box Hill - one of the Surrey Hills range that includes the OS location Leith Hill. Like Leith Hill, Box Hill is owneed by the National Trust and is a site of special scientific interest due to the presence of rare orchids. The main Boxhill station building was built in 1867, is now a listed building, and has been restored to its full Victorian splendour since the filming of 'The Tomorrow People', although the main entrance to the building now houses a florists' shop rather than a ticket office.
