“Are we to learn how to transfer today B’tan?” Varshanth asked as he got up from his spot on the ledge.

B’tan looked up from his studying and watched as his dragon stretched his small wings and said, “I don’t know, it’s really up to the fledglingmaster. I think some will be learning today but I doubt we’ll be one of them.”

The brown snorted and walked up to his rider. “Why is that?”

B’tan sighed and closed his book, knowing he wouldn’t get anything else done. “I’ve heard they start with the large dragons and move down to the smaller ones, so we’ll be near the bottom if that’s true.”

Varshanth sat down and curled his tail around his front legs before asking, “Well can we go to training early to find out?”

B’tan nodded and stood up, walking towards the ledge. “Sure, c’mon.” Varshanth got up and trotted out to his rider, who climbed up to his dragon’s back quickly. The brown let him get situated and then leapt from the ledge, heading for the training grounds.

When they reached the training grounds the fledglingmaster waved them over and greeted B’tan as he dismounted and turned to him. “Coming to training early B’tan? That’s not like you so what’s up?”

B’tan smiled and patted his bond’s leg. “It was his idea, you know I wouldn’t have wanted to start training until I had to.”

The fledglingmaster nodded and said, “Yes but once you start you hold up well, unlike some of the others, who like to slack off after the first half.”

B’tan nodded and said, “Actually, I have a question for you.” The fledglingmaster gestured for him to continue so B’tan said, “I was just wondering whether or not we’ll be learning to transfer today. I’ve heard that most masters move from the larger dragons on to the smaller ones.”

The fledglingmaster nodded and said, “Yes that’s true, most masters do use that approach, but I feel that it’s unfair so I go by who has been the hardest working during training. So yes, you might in fact learn to transfer today.”

B’tan smiled and said, “Thank you for clearing that up!”

The fledglingmaster laughed and asked, “I’ll see you back here at training?”

B’tan climbed back to his bond’s back and said, “For sure!”

Later that day the fledglingmaster called out to B’tan and Varshanth, his voice barely carrying over the strong wind that had blown up after B’tan had gotten back to the cearlet Varhsanth said, “He wants us to transfer from here over to the lake.”

B’tan nodded and put his arm up, letting him know that he understood. He pictured the lake and then sent the image to Varshanth, who concentrated on it for a moment then made the transfer. A few moments later they were over the lake, with the rest of the fledglings mere dots in the distance. “We did it!” B’tan cried out happily.

Varshanth warbled and said, “And you thought we wouldn’t learn to do this today. Do you think we are to go back as well?”

B’tan shrugged and said, “Ask the fledglingmaster’s dragon.”

Varshanth crooned in response and then asked the question. He then said, He says that if we felt we were successful to come back, otherwise wait here for the others.”

B’tan nodded and said, “Well we were successful, so let’s go back.”

When they transferred back, the fledglingmaster was smiling widely. “Wonderful!” He cried out when they were close enough. “I don’t think I’ve seen anyone do that well their first time in awhile! How do you feel after that one Varshanth, tired?”

Varshanth snorted and said, “No sir, it was not hard to do. I could have gone a longer distance if needed.”

The fledglingmaster smiled and said, “Great, he’s long-distance as well!” He rubbed his chin in thought for a moment and then said, “Well you two are done for the day. Tomorrow you’ll work on longer distance transfers and we’ll be starting flaming soon as well. I want to see how far this little brown can throw fire.”

B’tan laughed and thanked the fledglingmaster and then asked him permission to transfer back to the Caer.

He nodded and said, “Of course, after that I think I’d let you transfer anywhere on Alskyr, and we might try that as well.”

B’tan put his hand up in farewell and then transferred back to the Caer.
