Hejalian ran to the back door and called out, "dad, dad! There's dragons landing in the hold!" The boy’s dad walks out and looks up at the sky. "Well maybe they'll go to the next hold. I've already lost one boy to those monsters, I'm not letting you go that’s for sure," he says. Hejalian frowns but says "but Saranon got to go to the Weyr! And that was only a couple years ago!" His father's face turned beet red in anger and he said, "your mother let him go! I would never have done that!" Hejalian was about to say something that he would regret for the rest of his life, or at least his life at the hold. "Mom let him go because she didn't want him sucked into your habit of gambling!" Hejalian gasps as he hears himself saying this. Not only did he surprise himself at what he just said but also his dad.

He was about to turn and run when his father grabbed him by the shirt collar and dragged him into their small home. "I never want to hear anything like that again! Do you hear me? I DO NOT have a gambling problem!" With that, he threw Hejalian into is romm and locked the door behind him as he walked back out. "Great," Hejalian said to himself as he looks at the new bruises he's acieved by argueing with his father. "Good, I'll have these for another sevenday or so. A great fix I've gotten myself into this time, now not only can I not go down to meet the dragons but now I can't even see them." He gets up and walks to the window, and upon sticking his head out the window he sees a lone dragonrider, going up and down the streets, with his dragon walking slowely behide him. Hejalian's spirits jump and he waves frantically to the dragonrider but he doesn't see him and the dragonrider walks silently down an alleyway and out of sight. The dragon stays behind and looks in Hejalian's direction.

I think there may be a likely candidate down this way B'nol. The dragonrider comes into view again and looks in the direction his dragon's eyes are stuck on. He nods his head and walks over to their home and knocks on the door. Hejalian puts his ear to the door as the dragonrider raps on it three times. "What do you want?" Hejalian's father asked. "I think there might be a likely candidate in your family. Would you mind if I were to talk to him or her?" The dragon rider asked. There's a deafening silence before his father replies "there is no one here but me. My other son has already Impressed at your dreadful Weyr." There is another pause and then the dragonrider replies "my dragon seems to think otherwise. I'm sure there is someone here. I could, however, get the Lord Holder." His father sighed and said "that won't be necessary."

The dragonrider had won! Hejalian walks quickly to his bed and lays down. his father walks in a moment later with the dragonrider. "Hejalian get up," his father says angrily. He rises slowely and rubs his eyes in mock sleepiness. "What?" Hejalian askes as he turns and sits up. The dragonriders eyes widen as he sees the bruises on his face and arms. "Can I talk to him alone please?" The dragonrider askes. "There's nothing you can tell him that you can't tell me," Hejalian's father says sternly. "Please sir I insist. My dragon will be upset if I can not question the boy fully," the dragonrider convinces his father with this and he walks out, closing the door behind him.

The first words out of his mouth were "Where did you get these bruises boy? Did your father do this?" Hejalian was quiet for a while before saying, "no I upset him. It's nothing." The dragonrider frowns and says, "it's far from nothing. If this was to happen in the Weyr, I don't even want to know what would happen to to person responsible. Anyway, on to the real matters of my journey. I'm B'nol. Who are you?" "Hejalian, sir," he replies. "Alright now, do you want to become a candidate at Talor Cliff Weyr?" He nods his head and B'nol smiles. "Alright, well that's enough for me. What do you think Ger?" He asks his dragon. A deep voice pops into his head and says, I think that he is a wonderful candidate for Lelianth's clutch. I do not think that his father will be willing to let us take him however. Hejalian's mouth drops open at this and B'nol laughs. "Well he doesn't have a say in this one Ger, we're taking him," B'nol says as he stands up and puts his hand on Hejalian's shoulder. He motions for him to follow him out and they walk into the kitchen where Hejalian's father is sitting.

"Where do you think you're going?" he asks. "To the Weyr of course," B'nol replies. "I've questioned the boy and my dragon sees him fit to stand." Hejalian's father shakes his head and tells the dragonrider, "you can't take him, and you can't make me." B'nol frowns and tells his father sternly, "I'm afraid you have no choice in the matter. Once a person is searched, no one can stop it. I'll let you know when the hatching is," and with that he led Hejalian out of the house and to his dragon. The brown looks down at him and smiles mentally. B'nol smiles at his success and helps the boy to his dragon's back. "Now hold on Hejalian, this is your first experience with going between but there's nothing to be afraid of. Both Ger and I are here," and with that they took off for Talor Cliff Weyr.
