Weyrling

“Now I want you all to take off and fly into your wing positions alright?” Y’tro the weyrlingmaster was having a hard time keeping everyone quiet. They had known their wing positions for almost three months but today was going to be their first time in the air. “Are you all listening to me?” Y’tro asked as he climbed to the back of his brown. J’ril nodded his head, and he was one of the few that did the same. “Ok I want everyone to mount up. The last ones up don’t fly for a week!” J’ril scrambled to Delduwath’s back and had just strapped himself in when Y’tro said, “Good job to those who were listening.” He directed his gaze and J’ril and a two brownriders. Y’tro wiped a sleeve across his forehead before patting his dragon’s neck. The massive brown roared and the rest of the dragon and riders came to attention. “I’ve got three riders who are listening to me here. Now unless all of you want to remain grounded for a week or two while the rest of us learn to fly I suggest you mount up.” The remaining riders hastily mounted and J’ril sighed. Y’tro was in one of his moods again. This lesson was going to go really bad for everyone who didn’t listen. Then we have nothing to worry about. Y’tro and Vrenth have already seen we are here to learn and not talk like the rest of those wherry-brains.

Y’tro lifted his arm up and Vrenth leaped into the air. J’ril and the rest did the same, rising on unsteady wings. A few were left behind and Delduwath commented on Vrenth’s mood. Vrenth is in a testy mood today J’ril but I do not think he will direct his impatience at us today. J’ril nodded, glad to hear this. Delduwath glided into their wing position, left wingthird and waited for the next instruction. Y’tro held his hand out to the right and the wing flew behind him, circling the Weyr a few times before Delduwath said, Vrenth says we need to close in a bit. J’ril nodded and Delduwath moved them in a few feet. They were flying along nicely when Vrenth suddenly bugled and dived down towards the ground, wings flat against his sides. The other weyrlings started to dive as well but J’ril held up his hand. They would not have us dive the first day would they Deld? Ask Vrenth. Delduwath did and when he got the answer he roared out a command that stopped even the most dimglowed people to pull their dragons back into position. Vrenth says that Y’tro is hurt, from what I he does not know but we are to remain in the wing until he gives us other instructions. J’ril looked down at the brown, pacing back and forth along the Weyr wall. Would you mind asking him if he wishes us to fly around the Weyr a few more times. Delduwath obliged. Yes he wishes us to fly but he wants us in the wingleader position, he said excitedly. The black glided into the first position and then instructed bronze Tilionth to move back to their position.

The wing flew around the Weyr a few more times and then J’ril thrust his arm into the air and brought it back down again, instructing everyone to land. Delduwath glided down to the ground and landed with a quiet thump. When everyone else landed he gave the signal to dismount and go part ways. J’ril remained on Delduwath however and walked back to the Weyr, wanting to check on Y’tro. I hope Y’tro is all right. Vrenth was very shaken up when I talked to him. J’ril nodded. “I hope he’s ok too.”

J’ril dismounted and went to the healer’s hall. When he walked into the room the head healer stopped him. “Who are you and what do you want?” J’ril stepped back, surprised that the woman was yelling at him. “I…I’m J’ril. I wanted to check up on Weyrlingmaster Y’tro. He was leading us in our wings when Vrenth dove. I was instructed to take the wingleader position and then fly around a few more times before landing. I…” The woman scratched her eyebrow. “You can’t see him. He’s not well.” J’ril frowned and took his riding helmet off. “He’s not going to… die is he?” J’ril asked. The woman shook her head. “No he’s not. He’s had a mild heart attack but after a few days of bed-rest he should be fine.” J’ril nodded and walked out of the door, relieved that Y’tro would soon be well enough to train them again.
