Hatchlings
Karlean walked back to the Weyr, wondering how she was going to break the news to L’das. She knew that he wanted to remain in the same weyr as her but unfortunately she didn’t feel the same way. Valirith looked up as her rider entered the room and said, Oricanluth was being mean again Karlean. Karlean sighed and walked to her hatchling’s side. “I know dear,” she said as she rubbed the green’s eyeridges. “We will soon be out of here and he will not be able to pick on you any more.” Valirith crooned in happiness and asked, We are going to relocate? Will that not make L’das upset? Karlean shrugged and replied, “I don’t really care at this point Val. He will understand when I tell him that I will not have his Oricanluth picking on you.” Valirith warbled and said, Where are we to go? To a different Weyr? Karlean shook her head and said, “Oh no, not to a different Weyr. We’ll just ask to be moved into different living quarters and preferably on a different floor.” The green scratched her head with her back leg and said, Do you think that Oricanluth will like me in later years? Karlean shrugged and stood up. “I have no idea Valirith. Hey have you seen Fossit lately?” She asked. Valirith stood as well and said, Not since this morning. I am sure he is fine though. Firelizards always seem to show up where they are needed, or if there is food. Karlean laughed and patted her dragon’s head. “Would you like to go down to the lake today?” She asked as she walked towards on of the chairs. Valirith warbled and said , I would love to!
Karlean and Valirith walked down to the lake and when they reached it Valirith bounded towards the water and leaped in. “Stay near the shore Val!” Karlean called out to her. The green warbled in response and dove under the water, coming up a few hundred feet away. Karlean smiled and then sat down on the sand by the edge of the water. Valirith swam around a little more and then climbed slowly from the water and lay down next to her rider. “What? You’re done already?” Valirith warbled and said, I am not done, only tired and resting. Karlean laughed and patted her dragon’s wet head. Are you going to ask for a new weyr today at some point or must I stay with Oricanluth for another night? She asked. Karlean looked at her dragon and said, “Whatever you want to do. If you can’t put up with him for another night then I’ll go request a new weyr tonight and we can move in after dinner. If you can wait, I’ll get it done either tomorrow or the next day.” Valirith snorted and said, I would like to get it done tonight.
A few hours later Karlean stood up and woke her dragon from her sleep. What is it? she asked drowsily. Karlean smiled and said, “I want to go request a new weyr now. Would you like to come?” Valirith stood up slowly and stretched, mouth opening wide in a large yawn. Yes I will come. Karlean let her dragon stretch a little more and then led the way to the weyrlingmaster’s quarters. They entered the Weyr Bowl and Valirith stuck close to her rider’s side. “What? Scared?” Karlean asked jokingly. Valirith snorted and said, Of course I’m not scared, only a little bit intimidated. She had right to be. The Bowl was filled with adult dragons and riders today, going out to practice wing formations perhaps. “Oh don’t worry Val, they probably don’t even notice us.” Valirith nudged her rider’s leg and said, That one does. She craned her neck around in the direction of a smaller brown and Karlean smiled, “Well maybe a few notice you, come on we’ve got stuff to get done.”
Karlean knocked on the weyrlingmaster’s door lightly and then waited for it to open. When it did the weyrlingmaster said, “Oh Karlean I was expecting you. My dragon informs me that you and Valirith are unhappy in your living quarters?” Karlean let her mouth hang open for a moment and then shot a look towards her dragon. You’ve been complaining to the weyrlingmaster’s dragon? She asked. Valirith made a startled squawk and said, I would never! I knew that if I told you I was unhappy that would be enough. Karlean patted her dragon’s head and then said, “Um, yes we are actually. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you know?” The weyrlingmaster smiled and said, “Your dragon complains rather loudly.” Karlean laughed and said, “Oh alright, I’ll try to quiet her down a little then.” The weyrlingmaster nodded and asked, “When would you like to transfer?” Karlean shrugged and said, “I was kind of hoping we could move tonight.” The weyrlingmaster raised his eyebrows and said, “The conditions are that bad?” Karlean nodded and said, “Yes. My friend’s dragon picks ion her constantly.” The weyrlingmaster nodded and said, “Well let me get my boots and I’ll see what I can do for you.”

“C’mon Ori, it’s time to get out,” L’das called to his dragon. The blue hatchling just looked up at him briefly before diving under the surface of the water again. L’das sighed and sat down, knowing that he was going to be here for another hour or so trying to get his dragon out of the lake. Oricanluth poked his head up out of the water about five minutes later and looked over at his rider, who had a frustrated look on his face. The blue chuckled inwardly and dove under again. L’das looked over just in time to see the tip of his hatchling’s blue tail disappearing beneath the surface. He scratched his chin and then smiled, thinking up a plan that would surely work. He stood up slowly and started walking from the lake. A few moments later Oricanluth said, Where do you think you are going? L’das smiled and turned around, seeing his dragon near the edge of the lake, looking towards him. “I’m going home,” he said simply as he turned around. The blue snorted and asked, Without me?” L’das shrugged and said, “You can find your own way up.” He started walking again and a few seconds later he heard labored breathing and claws hitting the ground heavily. Oricanluth head butted his rider when he reached his rider and said, I will not let you leave me at that lake by myself. L’das smiled and patted his dragon’s head , leading the way back to their weyr.
When they got back to the weyr L’das plopped heavily in one of the well worn armchairs. Oricanluth sat down next to him and said, Where are Karlean and Valirith? L’das shrugged and said, “I don’t know but I’m sure they’ll be back. Are you worried about them?” L’das added this last part, a slight mocking tone in his voice. Oricanluth picked up on it and snorted. I am not worried about them, only curious as to where they went. L’das nodded slightly and smiled, deciding to antagonize his dragon a little more. "You know you like the little green,” L’das said as he absently picked up a book and began to flip through it. The blue warbled in surprise and said, I do not! Besides, she doesn’t like me anyway. L’das shrugged and said, “That doesn’t mean that you don’t like her.” Oricanluth refolded his wings and then said, Well you like Karlean.
L’das smiled and said, “Yes but I’ll admit it, you won’t.” Oricanluth scratched his neck and then asked, She does not like you either? L’das shook his head and said, “No I don’t think so. When we were back at the Hold I used to make her things, but she thought it was just out of friendship.” Oricanluth warbled softly and said, Well if it helps any, Valirith can’t stand me. She avoids me at all costs. L’das nodded and put the book down. “That’s only because you torment her to no end. Perhaps if you were nice to her she would be likely to fall for you in the end. However, at the rate you’re going with her I think she’ll still hate you in death.”
L’das stood up and walked to the service shaft, ringing the bell once and then walking to the small eating table. “Do you think I should order food for Karlean?” L’das asked as he moved some of the shacks of paper from the table. Oricanluth shrugged and said, I don’t know if you should, considering you don’t know where she went and whether or not she’ll be back soon. L’das nodded and said, “Yeah I guess you’re right.” When L’das had finished moving the sheets of hide to the floor the service shaft gears started to grind and L’das walked over, taking the tray of food from the shaft and setting it on the table, letting it cool. Oricanluth wrinkled his nose as his rider took the tray lid off and asked, L’das what is that smell? L’das shrugged and sat down at the table. “I have no idea, the fried vegetables maybe.” Oricanluth walked to the other room and said, It smells. L’das laughed and started to eat the meal. When he had finished he sent the tray back down and wiped the table off. When he finished that he began to walk back to the armchair. Just as he was about to sit down however, Karlean walked in the door. L’das smiled and asked, “Where have you been all day?” Karlean smiled back slightly and said, “L’das, I’m moving out.”
