A light tinkling hits the metal ceiling above him. He rolls over in bed but it only starts raining harder. Sighing in frustration, he throws the covers off himself and gets out of bed. He went to the window and opened to look outside by he never got a chance. A large bronze firelizard flew in and starts squawking at Kenallin for whatever reason it felt fit. "Get out of here Ockley! Go bug your owner, she's only in the next room," he says in anger. The firelizard squawks again and then flies out the door. "Dumb thing," Kenallin says to himself. He looks out the window and down to the docks. The boats are rocking back and forth, its amazing they don't flip over in this wind. Kenallin walks into the kitchen and sits down, only to be squawked out of his seat by the bronze firelizard. "Get out!" Kenallin screams. The firelizard warbles in protest but Kenallin gets a broom from the closet and "sweeps" him out of the room and closes the door before he can get back in. "Stupid thing, I'm gonna be glad when I get out of here," he says. "Where are you planning on going?" A voice says. Kenallin whips around to find his mother standing there. "Oh I'm sorry, that stupid firelizard wouldn't even let me sit down to eat," Kenallin says. His mom smiles and says, "Yes I know. I had to send him outside the other day too. But where are you planning on going Kenallin?" She asked. "The Weyr of course," he says, as if that should have been her first thought. "Oh of course," she says as she walks over to the counter and pours herself a cup of klah. "Why did I even ask? Well you might be in luck today. I've heard that Talor Cliff Weyr is sending some dragons to look for candidates," she says after she takes a sip. "Here? This hold? Are you sure?" Kenallin asked excitedly. His mom laughs and says "yes this hold. I used to be a drummer way back when. I still know the codes, even if they've changed a little over the years." Kenallin smiles at her, gets some bread from a cupboard and puts some berry jam on it and eats it quickly. "Are you sure?" His little sister asked him after she eats her breakfast about an hour later. "Yes I'm sure, how many times do I have to tell you?" Kenallin asked in frustration, "and mom's gonna let me go talk to them, I might even get to go to the Weyr." His sister frowns and says, "I want to go too. Why can't I go?" Before Kenallin can say anything his mom butts in. "You're too young Jenae. You have to be at least twelve and you're only ten." Jenae crosses her arms in frustration and pouts. "Where's my firelizard?" She asked all of a sudden. "Outside," Kenallin says plainly. "What?" She exclaims, "if you kill my firelizard Kenallin." Kenallin rolls his eyes and says "A little rain never hurt anyone, and if I kill him oh well." Jeana gives him a wicked look and then walks outside in search of her waterlogged firelizard. It stops raining about midday so Kenallin walks out and goes to the center of the Hold, where the dragons should be landing soon. His mother followed him and they stood in the chill afternoon air, waiting for the sun to peek through the clouds and warm the place up. Kenallin kept looking to the sky, but each time he did his spirits sank some more. "Don't worry Kenallin. They will come, the weather is now good. They have to wait for these clouds to clear before they can land. Kenallin looked back up at the sky and started smiling. "They're here! They're here!" he called out. His mom looked up and she started to smile as well. "See I told you, now let’s get out of the way so they can land," she said as she took Kenallin's hand and led him off to the side by some buildings as the dragons landed. As the dragonriders dismounted, they all split up in different directions. One bluerider walked over to Kenallin and his mother. "Hi there. I think that you might make a good candidate. That is, if you want to become one," she says. Kenallin looks at her for a moment and then says, "I'd love to be a candidate. Where would I be standing?" The dragonrider smiles and says "Talor Cliff Weyr. We can go there now if you like. Check it out first if you wish I mean." Kenallin looks to his mother and she nods. The dragonrider smiles. "Great! My dragon is over here. We'll have you at Talor Cliff in no time," she says as she climbs up her dragon's leg and helps Kenallin and his mom up behind her. Just as they're about to take off Jenae's bronze firelizard flies up and starts squawking at them. "Shut up Ockley! Go back home!" Kenallin says as they take off. The firelizard is left alone in confusion. | Hatchling | Weyrling | Adult | |
