K’lin walked back into the weyr carrying a large bowl of meat for his recently hatched Cagnaith. “You’d better appreciate this you bottomless pit,” he said as he walked into the room his dragon occupied. Cagnaith crooned and said, I will always appreciate it if it is food. K’lin laughed and set the bowl down by the dragon couch. “I’ll be glad when we will be allowed to fly to the hunting grounds to feed.” Cagnaith warbled in agreement as he stuck his wedge shaped head into the bowl. When he had finished K’lin took the bowl back down to the lower caverns. “Done already?” The woman asked as he handed it to her. He nodded and said, “Well he’s already a month old so he’s beginning to grow. He’s almost double the size he was when he hatched.” The woman nodded and said, “Well come back when you need more, which shouldn’t be for a sevenday, give or take a few days.” K’lin said goodbye and then walked back to his weyr. When he walked in the door Cagnaith, who was curled up by the door, greeted him. “What are you doing Cag?” K’lin asked. The brown warbled and said, I was waiting for you K’lin. The weyrling master’s dragon just contacted me and said that we have a class soon. He would prefer if we were not late. K’lin nodded and said, “Well then let’s go. It’s not that far away and we won’t have to go up or down any stairs so you won’t have a problem keeping up this time.” Cagnaith warbled and asked, So it is in the bowl then? K’lin nodded and led the way out of the weyr. When they walked into the room where the weyrling training was held the weyrling master, D’tol, greeted them with a nod of his head. K’lin returned it and then the older brownrider pointed to an empty seat, instructing K’lin to sit there. He sat down and Cagnaith sat down heavily on his haunches next to him. When everyone was in the room D’tol cleared his throat and said, “Welcome everyone. Most of you have been keeping track of the time, but for those who haven’t, you are now in your second month of training. Congratulations, you only have eleven more month’s to go until you graduate to sr. weyrling status.” A few of the dragonriders laughed at this joke but it just made K’lin think of how much harder things were going to get. “Today,” D’tol said, snapping K’lin’s thoughts. “We will be learning about the anatomy of the wing. When we finish that, which win hopefully be tomorrow or the day after, we will have a quiz, or test, I haven’t quite decided yet.” K’lin groaned. He was never very good at test taking. D’tol cleared his throat again and said, “For those who think they do not have very good study skills, see me after class.” D’tol walked to the writing board and picked up a piece of chalk. “Now let’s begin.” K’lin yawned as D’tol went on about how it was important to check the wings after a Fall to be sure that there isn’t any scarring. “Am I boring you K’lin?” D’tol asked. The boy jumped and shook his head. “No sir you’re not.” D’tol rubbed his chin and smiled. “I’m not am I? Well to be honest, I’m boring myself.” K’lin laughed and patted Cagnaith’s head when he nudged him. D’tol looked at his wrist and said, “Well class is almost over anyway and I suppose you can leave early since no one is listening anyway. However, don’t think this will happen often.” The boy sitting next to K’lin stood up and practically ran from the room, blue dragon following closely behind. D’tol shrugged. “See what I do to the poor students that have to listen to me? The rest of you are free to go now if you wish.” K’lin and the rest of the riders said good day and then walked out of the room, dragon by their side. He has never done that before K’lin. I wonder if maybe he is ill. K’lin laughed but shook his head. “I just think that he knew we weren’t paying attention and he probably didn’t feel like explaining everything again tomorrow.” Cagnaith warbled and said, Well I don’t mind getting let out early. That gives you some time to go to the lower caverns for me. K’lin sighed. “You’re hungry again? You ate an hour ago.” Cagnaith crooned and said, I cannot help it if I am growing K’lin. Do you want me to be the only brown who is the size of a large blue? K’lin smiled and said, “No of course not. We have to get back to the weyr and then I have to change because I’m meeting someone for dinner.” Cagnaith crooned and walked swiftly towards the lower caverns, followed closely by his rider.| Hatchling | Weyrling | Adult | |
