“Have you ever wondered whether or not there’s life on other planets besides our own?” K’lin asked as he looked up at the stars. Cagnaith rolled onto his back and said, Of course not. I do not wonder about things that are known. K’lin smiled and asked, “How do you know that there’s life on other planets?” The brown snorted and looked up towards the Red Star, now only a small speck in the sky. I do not mean that there is other life on the planets in our system. There could be millions of life forms on planets outside our system, or even our galaxy for that matter. K’lin sighed and stroked his lifemate’s eyeridge. “But how do you know this Cag?” The brown sighed, obviously annoyed by the fact that his rider couldn’t understand what he meant. The only way I can think of this and have it make sense is this: If Pern is the only planet with life, it would be a waste of space wouldn’t it?

The two lifemates lay there for about another hour and then K’lin stood up. “I think I’m going to go to bed now Cag, I can barely keep my eyes open.” Cagnaith bent his head slightly in a nod and then said, I agree with you and I shall follow your example. What are we to do tomorrow? K’lin shrugged as he led the way back into the weyr. “I don’t know. I was kind of thinking about Impressing a firelizard or something so that you can have some company while I am busy with my usual boring chores and duties. Would you like that?” Cagnaith plopped down on the dragon couch when he reached it and said, I am not sure that I would. I mean, I would not mind having company but I do not think that a firelizard would be my best bet. They are quite noisy and I think that it would get on my nerves. K’lin nodded and said, “Well don’t worry about it then. We’ll figure it out in the morning alright?” Cagnaith nodded again and K’lin rubbed his eyeridge affectionately before walking into his bedchamber.

The next morning K’lin woke up early, much earlier than he had wished. After rubbing his eyes a few times he wrapped a blanket around his shoulders and walking into Cagnaith’s quarters. The brown was already awake as well, twitching his tail absently and looking out towards the hunting grounds. “What’s the matter?” K’lin asked as he sat down next to his dragon. Cagnaith warbled and said, There is a queen to rise soon. All the others are leaving. K’lin shrugged and said, “So?” Cagnaith looked down at his rider and said, So I would like to enter a flight soon K’lin. Not this particular one of course but one soon if it is possible. K’lin walked towards the ledge and looked down at the hunting grounds where a bunch of males were gathered around a large, shinning golden female. “I didn’t know you wanted to enter one so badly Cagnaith, if you had told me sooner you could have been in this one.” Cagnaith snorted slightly and said, Don’t worry K’lin, I am not upset that I missed this one. There will be plenty to follow it. I would like to travel around to different Weyrs today though and see who exactly is rising. K’lin nodded and watched as the queen leapt into the air, followed quickly by the males. “That can be arranged.”

Later that afternoon K’lin mounted up and took Cagnaith to a couple different Weyrs. When they came out of between over Dawn Sisters Weyr however, Cagnaith said, This is the one. There is bound to be a female that would suit me here. K’lin raised an eyebrow and asked, “You’re sure?” The brown warbled an answer and then spiraled down, landing lightly in the Weyrbowl. The brownrider slid from his dragon’s back and walked towards the hatching sands, Cagnaith following closely behind. Near the large arched doorway to the sands, a few sheets of hide were posted on the wall. K’lin flipped through them and said, “This is it Cag. There are a few females that are rising now. One of them is gold Valorith.” Cagnaith warbled and nudged his rider. I wish to enter her flight K’lin, he said simply. “You don’t want to know who else is rising?” Cagnaith cocked his head to one side in answer and said, There is no need I do not think. Besides, I’m sure she is very polite and beautiful, much like her rider I’m assuming. K’lin rolled his eyes and asked, “You’re sure about this one? You know you can only enter one flight at a time and you may have better luck in a different one.” Cagnaith rumbled and said, I have made my decision K’lin. I’m going to enter gold Valorith’s flight and I’m going to try my best to catch her as well!
