Wingrider

Mev’rin looked up into the sky and sighed. “Looks like it’s going to rain,” he told his dragon, who was stretched out on the dragon couch behind him. The blue snorted and said, Well I don’t mind. It is fun to fly in the rain anyway. Mev’rin turned around and smiled. “Would you like to go for a short one then?” Ryuzoth warbled and said, I would like that very much but why can it not be a long one? Mev’rin shrugged and said. “I don’t want to be out there very long because I don’t want to get sick and I’m sure you don’t either.” Ryuzoth snorted and said, Oh all right then. Can we go now? Mev’rin nodded and climbed to his dragon’s back.

They glided down off of the ledge and Ryuzoth bugled in happiness. Mev’rin gripped one of the neck ridges in front of him as his blue turned their lazy glide into a steep dive. Mev’rin whooped as they dove and was almost lost his seat when Ryuzoth pulled up from the dive suddenly. “Watch it there Ry, I don’t have the saddle remember?” The blue warbled an apology and then flew off towards the coastline. Can we go swimming Mev’rin? He shrugged and said, “Why not? I’m already soaking. I hadn’t realized just how hard it was raining.” Ryuzoth bugled again and sped off towards the ocean.

As they flew over it Mev’rin wondered why Ryuzoth hadn’t set down in the sand. Why do you think I did not Mev’rin? The blue asked as he changed his direction abrubtly and flew higher into the air. “I don’t know but I would like to know so that I have at least some warning.” The blue snorted as he leveled out and hovered for a moment. But it wouldn’t be as fun if I told you what I was doing. Mev’rin sighed and gripped the ridge in front of him with all his might. Ryuzoth looked down at the water and then folded his wings against his sides, diving down to the warm ocean water. Just when Mev’rin expected a large splash and searing pain Ryuzoth pulled up and slid across the surface like a water skier. As he lost speed he sank into the water and warbled. Mev’rin laughed and said, “Ya know, it’s a good thing you didn’t tell me. It wouldn’t have been as fun!”

They swam in the ocean for a while and then Mev’rin swam towards the shore. Ryuzoth followed slowly and asked, Must we go now? Mev’rin stood up in the now shallow water and said, “Oh no not yet. I just wanted to get out.” The blue nodded and followed his rider. Mev’rin ran a hand through his hair and tried to get as much water out of it as possible. He sat down on the sand and looked out over the water. They were both quiet for a moment and then Ryuzoth said, Mev’rin? Will I ever be able to enter a mating flight? Mev’rin looked up at his dragon, a little surprised. “You wish to enter one?” The blue nodded and said, Yes, I mean, if it’s alright with you. Mev’rin nodded and stood up. “I don’t have a problem with it. In fact, I was wondering when you were going to ask. Would you like to go now and see who is rising back at the Weyr?” Ryuzoth warbled and Mev’rin climbed up to his dragon’s back again.

Ryuzoth landed lightly in the Weyrbowl and Mev’rin slid down. “Let’s go check the hatching sands. Maybe they have the list posted there,” he said as he walked in that direction, Ryuzoth following closely behind. When they reached the hatching sands a woman stood up from a desk and walked up to them. “Can I help you,” she asked as she looked Mev’rin over. “Well I’m looking for the flight forms,” he said. She nodded and pointed back down the hall. “They’re posted on the wall right before you would have walked down here.” Mev’rin nodded, thanked her and then turned around.

When they reached the flight list Mev’rin looked it over and asked, “How about green Ranth? She’s got a couple spots open still.” Ryuzoth warbled and asked, Do you think she’ll choose me over the browns and rares that may enter her flight? Mev’rin shrugged and said, “You never know what those females are thinking but I think you will have a good chance with her.” The blue crooned happily and then said, Alright then, you may put my name down. Mev’rin smiled and wrote his dragon’s name and color on the sheet. “Now we wait to see who will emerge victorious.”
