Hatchling

Mianda cried out as she ran her foot into the leg of the chair. Nervan, her gold-white firelizard chirruped and flew to her shoulder, rubbing her head against the side of her owner’s face. Hurthurt, the firelizard thought. “No I’m alright Nervan don’t worry. It will go away soon,” she told the firelizard as she massaged her foot. The gold-white chirped again and then flew to the base of the chair and started scratching the leg of the chair. Badbadbad, she thought. Mianda smiled and picked the small creature up. “Let’s go see what Amauneth is up to alright?” Nervan chirped and thought, OkokAmauneth. Mianda stroked the gold’s head and then walked into the other room where her golden queen was lying on the dragon couch. “Morning Amauneth,” she said as she sat by her lifemate. Good morning Mianda, I trust you slept well? The hatchling asked. Mianda nodded and asked, “What would you like to do today?” The queen sighed and said, I do not mind. Whatever you wish to do. Mianda shrugged. “Would you like to go down to the lake?” Amauneth looked towards the door and hissed softly. Mianda spun around to see A’ren leaning against the doorframe. “The lake? Sounds good. I’m sure Urinth would like to go as well.” Mianda frowned and said, “Oh really? Well I think it’s going to be a girl’s day out today A’ren. He frowned and walked towards her, leaning down to kiss her. She pulled away and said, “A’ren, there was a reason I left Falas for Dark Moon.”

A’ren frowned when he had heard the entire story. “So you left to get away from me?” Mianda shook her head. “You were one of the reasons yes but not the only.” I knew you would leave, Urinth said from an unknown location. Mianda sighed and thought, Shells, hearing all dragons is a pain in my sharding butt. Amauneth snorted and she rubbed her eyeridges absently. “I can’t believe this,” A’ren said angrily. “I gave you everything and you’re just throwing it away? There’s someone else isn’t there?” Mianda crossed her arms and said, “What do you think I am A’ren, a whore?” He laughed cruelly. “You said it not me.” Mianda felt the blood rushing to her face and she was about to say something when he said, “Don’t even bother saying anything I wouldn’t listen. Well I hope your life is horrible here Mianda good day.” With that he stormed out of the room and Mianda sat down heavily. What was all that about Mianda? Amauneth asked quietly. Mianda tucked her hair behind her ears and said, “A mistake. I left the Weyr I was at before because things were getting too complicated. I didn’t have time to dedicate myself to my studies and such.” Amauneth warbled and asked, And he will not leave you alone now? Mianda shook her head. “No it’s not that. I never told him why I left but I’m sure he won’t be coming around here anymore.”

“Let’s go down to the lake now Amauneth,” Mianda suggested after awhile. The gold stood up and stretched and then said We have to go the long way I’m assuming? Mianda nodded, “Well yes considering that you can’t and aren’t allowed to fly yet.” Amauneth snorted by followed her rider from the weyr. When they reached the lake Amauneth waded in slowly and swam next to the shore where Mianda was walking. You are not coming in? She asked. Mianda shook her head as she sat down in the grass. “No not today. I will join you he next time we come here though.” Amauneth crooned and swam off towards a group of hatchlings that had hatched in the clutch before her. Mianda looked up at the sky and sighed. “What have I gotten myself into?” She asked herself. “I don’t know but would you like to share?” Mianda jumped and looked to her left, where a young man was standing. “I don’t know, I think the whole story would bore you.” The man laughed and said “Try me.” He sat down on the grass next to her and then put his hand out. “I’m Mev’rin by the way, rider of the blue lug over there,” he said as he pointed to his dragon. “That’s Ryuzoth.” Mianda smiled and said, “Nice to meet you Mev’rin. I’m Mianda, rider of Amauneth, she’s over there flirting with those males there.” “The gold?” He asked in surprise. She nodded and he said, “Wow, congrats. Now, let’s hear that story.”

Mianda told the story again and when she was finished Mev’rin ran a hand through his hair. “Wow, that’s pretty bad. You probably should have told him when you left though. I think it would have been easier for him to accept. Well that’s the way I would have preferred it anyway.” Mianda nodded and said, “Well yeah I guess you’re right but it just didn’t seem like a good idea at the time.” Mev’rin smiled and pulled a daisy out of the grass and began pulling the petals from it. She laughed and said, “What are you doing?” He looked up and smiled. “It’s been a habit since I was a kid. I just can’t break it.” She nodded in understanding and asked “How long have you had Ryuzoth?” he rubbed his chin in thought and said, about two years now, how long ago did you Impress Amauneth?” Mianda looked out towards her lifemate and said, “I Impressed her about a month ago.” He nodded and asked, “Would she be willing to meet me and Ryuzoth?” Mianda shrugged. “I don’t see why not. I’ll call her over,” she said as she looked over at her queen. Amauneth come here. Mev’rin and Ryuzoth wish to meet you. The queen looked in their direction and warbled before swimming over. “I’ll call Ryuzoth over as well.”

Amauneth stood in the shallows and watched as blue Ryuzoth swam over. Good morning Amauneth, your hide shines brightly today. Amauneth snorted and didn’t reply. “Amauneth be nice, he only gave you a compliment,” she said as she crossed her arms. “How do you know that?” Mev’rin demanded. She shrugged and said, “I hear all dragons, which can be a pain at times.” Mev’rin’s jaw dropped and he said, “Wow, not many people have had that talent.” She shrugged again and said, “What do you say to the polite blue Amauneth?” The gold sighed and said, Thank you Ryuzoth, you look well youself. “Thank you Amauneth. Well this is my beauty, I’ll admit we need to work on her manners but they'll come along won’t they?” She asked Amauneth. The queen grumbled and Mev’rin laughed. “Well I think she’s wonderful. She’s extremely light in color isn’t she?” Mianda nodded and said, “Yes she is but it’s not her health, it’s her true color. I don’t know why she has that lighten tone. I mean, I thought that maybe she was meant to be a white but the size doesn’t make any sense. If anything she’s bigger then what she should be.” Mev’rin nodded and said, “Well I think it makes her stand out. She’ll be the first one noticed in a crowd of queens that’s for sure.”

Mianda and Mev’rin sat and talked for most of the afternoon and then he stood up. “I’m sorry but I’ve got to get going. I’ve entered Ryuzoth in a flight and I need to see how that’s coming along.” Mianda nodded and stood up as well. “Yes I’ve got a few things to attend to myself. I’d like to do this again though,” she said as she rubbed Ryuzoth’s eyeridges. Mev’rin nodded and said, “Yes I would too, I enjoyed myself immensely.” They said their good byes and then went their separate ways. When they were out of earshot of each other Amauneth asked, What will become of you two? Mianda raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean Amauneth?” She asked in confusion. The gold sighed and said, Will you two be having your own mating flights? Mianda laughed and said, “No, no. I think we’re going to remain friends, and besides Ryuzoth is a blue and that would not suit you I’m sure.” Amauneth snorted. Yes I suppose you’re right. So you feel nothing for him? Mianda shook her head. “No, nothing. Are you disappointed?” Amauneth crooned and said, No not really. It just seemed like he was interested in you until you said that you rode a queen. Is there something wrong with that? Mianda shook her head vigorously. “No of course not. It’s just that blues cannot catch a queen. They aren’t big enough and they don’t have as much stamina as say the bronzes and browns.” The little queen warbled and asked, Then who will chase me? I don’t know any bronzes and browns, well other then the ones that I met today. Mianda shrugged and said, “The male who catches you will be the most worthy.”
