Pertan was just waking up when his younger sister pounced on his bed. “Pertan wake up mother needs you in the kitchen!” Pertan sat up and rubbed his eyes. “Can she wait a second till I wake up all the way?” His sister shook her head ferociously. “I don’t think a kitchen fire will wait for you to wake up Pertan!” This woke him up fully and he jumped from his bed and ran into the kitchen. Upon arriving he heard his mother, father and sister yell out “SURPRISE!” Pertan stepped back and then burst out laughing. “Nice fire mom,” he said as his dad directed him to the seat at the end of the table. His sisters sat down and his parents brought out a large cake with a firelizard on the top. There were nineteen candles on it and he scratched his head. “Am I nineteen already?” His mother laughed and lit the candles. “Yes you are Pertan, now make a wish and blow them out.” Pertan smiled. “I think I know how it works now mom,” he said as he thought about his wish. After a moment he knew exactly what he wanted. I wish I could become a dragonrider, he thought as he blew out the candles. His family members cheered and then he cut the cake, giving each a large portion of the homemade birthing day cake.

After they had eaten his mother pulled a small box from a cupboard. “We don’t have much to give you this year Pertan, but we thought you’d like this,” she said as she set the box down in front of Pertan. He pulled the flaps up and looked into the box. There was a small black stone and a note. He frowned but looked at the note, wondering what his parents thought up this year. He pulled the note from the box and began to read.

Pertan,
Enclosed is a small black luck stone. We feel that you will need this when the dragons Search you, whether that be today or later in life.
Love,
Mom, Dad, Zella, Bria

Pertan looked up and smiled. “Are they coming today?” He asked hopefully. His mother smiled sadly and Pertan got up, taking the stone from the box and holding it tightly. “Thanks guys. I’m sorry to leave today and all but..” His father held up his hand and cut him off. “Don’t worry about it Pertan, just go get ready.”

He walked slowly back to his room and changed, also packing two weeks worth of clothing in a duffel bag before walking into the kitchen and giving everyone a hug. He was walking out the door when he heard Zella’s voice. “Hey you don’t think we’re all going with you?” She asked as she grabbed his arm and pulled him back. Pertan smiled and walked out the door, his family following him. They walked down to the hold courtyard and waited for the dragons to appear in the sky. They waited for what seemed like a turn before a blue and green appeared in the sky and circled to land. When they did they were instantly surrounded by hundred of people, hoping their children will be Searched. Pertan however, stayed back away from the crowd. Zella pushed him forward but he turned around and said, “If the dragons think I will make a good bonder they will come to me.” His mother nodded and Pertan rubbed his stone, hoping he was right.

They stood alone for about thirty minutes before anyone approached them. When someone did, they had the shoulder knots of a dragonrider. “Who’s here to be Searched?” Pertan raised his hand nervously and the dragonrider smiled. “I’m J'gen, rider of blue Helventh and he seems to think that you would make a good bonder.” Pertan smiled broadly and looked at his mother, who now had tears in her eyes. “Are you willing to join me on my journey back to Caer Talor Cliff?” Pertan nodded. “Yes I’d love to join you!” J'gen smiled and led him back to his blue. He scrambled to his neck and then helped Pertan up behind him. He strapped his bag down and then waved to his family members as Helventh rose from the ground and then teleported to Caer Talor Cliff.
