Sr. Weyrling

“Mak, go away I have to finish this paper,” bronze-brown rider R’nevin said. The weyrling lying by him snorted impatiently and lowered his head back to the cold weyr floor. “I’m sorry Makototh, but I’ve only got so many hours to do this, considering we have to be up early tomorrow to start making sweeps.” The weyrling snorted again but said, It is all right R’nevin. I only wanted to go down to the lake today. R’nevin patted the brown shoulder and went back to his paper.

After about two hours R’nevin put his quill down and stretched. Makatoth looked up hopefully and his rider stood from the chair and stretched again. Lake? He asked plainly. R’nevin nodded. “Yea, just give me a second here so my eyes can refocus, and then we’ll go.” Makototh got up and stretched his legs and then swiftly went into the other room, where he waited for his rider. R’nevin walked in slowly, rubbing his eyes. He looked to his dragon once they were focused and smiled. Makototh looked like he was ready to leap from the weyr with or without his rider. “I’m coming,” he said even as he walked to his dragon and climbed to his shoulders. Makatoth practically ran to the edge and then leapt off, almost unseating his rider. Makatoth glided towards the lake and landed heavily. R’nevin dismounted quickly and watched as his dragon took off again and then dove in, sending tidal waves of cool water up onto the soft green grass.

The brown-bronze weyrling reappeared above the surface again and blew water from his nostrils before swimming lazily back to his rider. It is nice out today R’nevin, he said cheerfully. R’nevin nodded and pointed towards the sky, where a blue dragon was circling. “This will be a good time for you to make friends Mak,” he said as he watched the blue land. Makototh snorted but swam to where the blue was now wading in. R’nevin smiled to himself and then stretched out on the grass, looking at the sky. The sky was a deep, rich blue and there wasn’t a cloud in sight. He breathed in deeply, enjoying the smells of clean dragon hide, spring grass, and morning glories. Do you realize that we haven’t been able to spend a day doing what we’ve wanted since you’ve hatched? He asked his dragon silently. He heard Makototh rumble and then the deep voice saying, Yes I know what you mean. I have wanted to relax for many days now.

R’nevin closed his eyes, just enjoying the time outside the dusty Weyr, and he must have fallen asleep for when he woke up it was beginning to get dark out and Makototh was stretched out on the grass next to him. He blinked his eyes a few times and then placed a hand on his dragon’s withers. Makototh opened an eye slowly and then warbled happily. “You haven’t wanted to go back home have you?” He asked his lifemate. Makototh yawned mightily and then said, No I have not, but even if I had I would not have woken you. Do you wish to go back? R’nevin shook his head but got up, stretching his back once he was up on his feet. No, I’m alright. Who else have you talked to since I’d fallen asleep?” Makototh sat up and looked at his rider. Well the blue that landed while you were awake was Kuraeth. However, I have also met brown Gevath, bronze Sernath and Alleonith, as well as green Dahlieth and Viriith, he said smugly. R’nevin nodded. “Sounds like you’ve made yourself available to the females I’m guessing?” Makototh’s eyes swirled a bit quicker as he said, Of course. R’nevin shook his head and then patted his dragon’s leg. “Alright lets go back home.”
