Reggina walked down the hallway happily, Hlian clinging to her shoulder. She turned a corner and walked towards the beast pens. Hlian chirped and Reggina stroked him absently as she walked. When she reached the gate she opened it and closed it behind her. “Jervan?” She called out. A man stood up and waved. Reggina waved back and then walked towards him. “How’s it going Reggie?” The man asked. She shrugged and said, “Pretty good I suppose. Weyr life has been dull lately.” Jervan nodded. “Well that’s understandable. You’ve graduated from weyrling training almost two years ago and there hasn’t been any Thread to fight. How’s your green lump of a dragon anyway?” Reggina shrugged and pulled two pieces of grass out of the ground, braiding them as she talked. “She’s doing well. She should be coming into heat fairly soon as well.” Jervan smiled and said, “Are you looking forward to it?” She sighed and said, “I suppose. I’m just afraid that I won’t be able to control her when she does rise.” Jervan shrugged. “I don’t think you’ll have anything to worry about. I’m sure she’ll listen to you.”

She sat and talked with the beastmaster for a while longer and then said, “Well I came out here to ride so who do you have that needs working?” Jervan rubbed his beard in thought and then said, “Well there’s a bay mare that needs to get out, but I know how you feel about mares. Well come with me and we’ll see what I’ve got.” Reggina nodded and followed Jervan to the barn. They walked down the isle and stopped at a gray gelding. “He needs to get out pretty bad. You’ll need to watch him though, he likes to play corner games and test how must you know. I’m sure you can handle it though.” Reggina nodded and grabbed the halter from the door. She opened the door slowly and walked in. “What’s his name Jervan?” She asked as she slipped the halter on. He shrugged and opened the door wider so Reggina could lead him out. “He got here about a month ago, but he hasn’t gotten out much. No one seems to like him when they’re on him so he hasn’t been named yet.” Reggina nodded and went to get the brushes and tack.

She came back to his side and brushed him off. As she went to pick up his front hoof he turned his head back, ears pinned. “Easy there boy,” she said as she picked it out. The gelding snorted but didn’t bite. She finished grooming and then placed the saddle pad on his back. She left it there for awhile before placing the saddle on his back as well. “He’s pretty good with tacking up Jervan,” she said as she reached for the girth. “Yeah, well wait till you start tightening that,’ he said as he pointed to the girth in her hand. Reggina nodded and started to tighten the girth slowly. The gray snorted and kicked out, missing Reggina by about a foot. “Well we can’t have that,” she said as she wrenched it up as far as it would go. She did it so quick that the gelding didn’t have anytime to react and by the time he realized what had happened Reggina was already putting the bit in his mouth.

Reggina led him outside and Jervan helped her mount up. When she had adjusted the stirrups so they supported her legs correctly she clucked him on and walked around in a few twenty-meter circles. “He really needs a name Jervan, and I don’t know what to call him.” Jervan shrugged and said, “Well if you don’t like him there won’t be any point, fore he’ll be going somewhere else.” Reggina nodded and clucked him into a trot. She trotted around the pen and tried to relax while at the same time being ready for him to bolt or rear. Reggina patted him on the neck as they went through a corner and she felt him relax a little. “How’s he feel?” Jervan called from his perch on the fence. “Pretty good, a little stiff maybe but he’s really smooth and balanced.” Jervan nodded and waved her on. She squeezed him a little more to get him to canter but instead he threw himself into a gallop. “Whoa,” she said as she pulled him back a little. He tossed his head but slowed down into a collected canter. “You look really good on that beast Jervan called from the fence.” Reggina put her hand up, letting him know that she heard him and cantered a few circles. She patted him again and then went around the outer edge of the pen.

Just as they were turning he reared up and spun around, taking off in the opposite direction. Reggina gripped his mane as he turned and then gritted her teeth as she ripped back on the reins. He hoped to a stop and then Reggina turned him around, kicking him into the corner. He pranced through it and then sighed heavily once he was on the long side again. “Well that was fun,” she said as she trotted past Jervan. “You’re the only one who’s stayed on when he’s done that,” he called out. Reggina was about to pick up a canter again when Foanith’s voice echoed through her head. Reggina I want to go down to the hunting grounds. Reggina sighed, halted the gray and then said, You were there yesterday, you don’t need to eat again until next week. I don’t wish to eat Reggina. She scratched her head and then turned the gray around and took off towards the fence. “Quick open the gate! I’m sorry Jervan but I’ve got to go, Foanith is about to rise!” Jervan swung the gate open and stopped Reggina as she was dismounting. “Don’t get off, you’ll get there faster if you’re on him. We’ll talk about names when you get back.” Reggina nodded and dug her heels into the gray's flanks sending him off at a gallop towards the hunting grounds.
