S'rac and Bronze Tonaeth
:Jr. Fledgling:
“I do not understand your obsession with water dragon-mine,” S’rac said as he leaned back in his chair.
The bronze shrugged and said, And I don’t understand how you cannot not stand to go in it.
“I don’t mind taking a bath or shower but the lakes and oceans have never interested me,” the bronzerider told him dragon.
Tonaeth rolled over onto his side and asked, Have you ever waded in a cool lake rider-mine?
“What does that have to do with anything?” S’rac asked nervously.
Tonaeth shrugged and said, I am merely inquiring whether or not you’ve done the things that you are so against.
S’rac sighed and said, “Ever since I was a young boy I’ve been afraid of the water. I have never understood why, but I have always avoided it.”
The bronze warbled and said, Well there is nothing to be afraid of S’rac. You’ve seen the dragons and riders in the Cavern Lake just as I have. They seem to be having a good time don’t they?
S’rac shrugged and said, “I suppose so. It’s just that I never went in the water as a child, so I think that it would be too late to start now.”
Don’t be ridiculous. There is always time to learn how to like water, no matter what stage of your life you are in.
S’rac sighed again and said, “Well today is not the day for me to learn Tonaeth, but perhaps later.”
They were both silent for a time, S’rac playing with the fraying ends of the armchair and Tonaeth watching his tail flick back and forth, when finally S’rac asked, “Do you get lonely during the day Ton?”
The bronze looked up and asked, What do you mean?
“I mean, when I’m away at classes and you must remain up here in the room. Do you ever get lonely?” S’rac asked.
Tonaeth stretched his wings and said, There are times, yes. Why do you ask?
S’rac rubber his chin in thought and then asked, “Would you like a companion of some sort?”
Tonaeth crooned and said, I would not mind having something to keep me company, in truth. What did you have in mind?
S’rac shrugged and said, “Maybe a cavern lizard?”
That sounds like a good idea rider-mine. However, where will you find one? Tonaeth asked his rider.
S’rac shrugged again and said, “There are always a few riders who know how to find them. I’ll ask around and see what I come up with.”
Right now? Tonaeth asked as he sat up, watching his rider intently.
S’rac nodded and stood up, saying “Yes, I think I will. I’ll be back soon though, hopefully with a new friend for you.”
About an hour later S’rac walked back through the door, holding a bright black colored cavern lizard. “See I told you I’d find one,” S’rac said as he placed the little hatchling next to Tonaeth.
Is it a he or a she? Tonaeth asked as he looked the cavern lizard over.
“I was told it is a male,” S’rac said as he sat down next to his dragon and the cavern lizard.
Well then he is very handsome S’rac. I thank you for bringing me a companion, Tonaeth said as Onyx, which is what S’rac decided to call him, climbed up onto the bronze’s leg.
S’rac smiled and said, “I’m glad you like him Ton.”
