“What are you talking about?” Kailna asked.
T’ren shrugged his shoulders. “I just knew I wouldn’t have time for him once I got here.”
His sister shook her head, hands on her waist. “You’ve had that runner since you were eight! And now you just sell him? Are you out of your mind?”
T’ren smiled. “It was hard to let him go but I had to. I couldn’t have taken care of him and a dragon
Kailna.”
Her mouth dropped open and T’ren smiled wider. “You Impressed? Why didn’t you send us a firelizard?”
T’ren shrugged. “Maybe it’s because I don’t have one but anyway, would you like to see him?” Kailna nods excitedly and T’ren leads her into the other room where Cbarroth was stretched out on the dragon couch.
“Oh my gosh he’s beautiful. What’s his name?” She asked.
The brown looked up at the two siblings and then snorted, closing his eyes again. “His name is Cbarroth and he says that off course he is beautiful for he is the highest ranking dragon that Lorinth clutched,” he says with a smile.
Kailna raises her eyebrows. “He was the only brown in the clutch?”
T’ren nodded. “She was flown by a blue and I suppose that’s why.”
T’ren and Kailna talked into the night, discussing family, life at the Weyr and of course Cbarroth. “What have you done the whole time you were here?” She asked.
T’ren scratched his head. “Well I had been riding Juie daily, well that was before I sold him to the Weyr. He’s sired many foals already, wonderful racing type runners. They all have his temperament thank the heavens. Unfortunately they all aren’t as quick-witted or fast. Which is fine. Besides that, reading, I’ve done a lot of reading.”
Kailna nods her head. “What ever happened to that feline I brought you? You’re still not afraid of them are you?”
T’ren shook his head. “He sleeps all day, usually in the bedchamber. I’ve named him Meomit by the way and we get along as long as he doesn’t bite or scratch me.”
Kailna smiled. “I told you it wasn’t a big deal. You haven’t tried to Impress a firelizard I’m guessing?”
T’ren shook his head. “No, and I don’t think I’m going to. I’ve already got to worry about Cbarroth and Meomit so I don’t know how I’d have time for a firelizard also.”
Kailna smiled. “Yeah I know what you mean. With my busy schedule I haven’t had a chance to look for a nest yet. I’ve wanted to though for it’s probably as close to a dragon as I’m going to get.”
T’ren crossed his arms and leaned back in the chair. “You’re not going to try to Impress?”
Kailna shook her head. “No I don’t think so. I’m already twenty-one and when I finally get around to applying for a clutch I won’t be of the desired age anymore.”
T’ren looked at the timepiece mounted on the wall and shook his head. “I’m sorry Kailna but I’ve got things to do tomorrow and if I don’t go to sleep now I’ll be a wreck.”
Kailna nodded, hugged her brother and then walked silently out the door. T’ren walked into the other room and sat down by his brown. “I think she is sad she won’t be able to Impress, don’t you Cbarroth?”
The dragon opened one eye and sighed. I do. She would have been much happier with a dragon as well. I mean over a runner beast or firelizard. I am sorry she will be too old in the next few years.
“Yes and I would have been too old if I had waited two years, which I was going to do originally. I’m glad I got Searched when I did though.”
Cbarroth warbled. Yes I am glad you were Searched when you were as well. For if you weren’t you and I would not be together I’m afraid to admit. The searchdragons must have known that I was to be in Lorinth’s clutch.
T’ren smiled and scratched his dragon’s eyeridges. “Well I’ve got to get to bed, you’ve got to be fed tomorrow and it’s a lot of work hauling that meat up those steep stairs.”
Cbarroth rumbled. Yes food sounds good but do they not bring it up to us?
T’ren snapped his fingers. “You know what, they do. However, I’ve still got to get some sleep. Goodnight Cbarroth,” he said as he walked from the room.
