Hatching Story

Lorinth had tended happily to her eggs each day after Kazamth's clutch had hatched, hardly even raising a stir when Resarith clutched in the space the gold had previously occupied- Surely one of the most devoted mothers Dark Moon had seen, she wouldn't leave her eggs now for a minute. Perhaps there was something special in those two largest eggs, that she simple had to guard.

Caylrie, however, was having K'var get Merrenth to bring in a herdbeast for Lorinth on the sands, when the green's first protests reached her ears- She had noticed the egg's movement, but was so disturbed by it, she made no mention to Caylrie, and Yukith had overheard. So while Azala was herding candidates onto the sand, the greenrider finally got wind of Lorinth's protests.

Hey! No! Get away from those! Those are my eggs, I spent a lot of time on them, and I'm not going to let you screw it up by impressing them! Caylrie groaned out loud, as the humming of the dragons gathered in the cavern became audible over the entire weyr, and quickly made her way to the sands.

"Lorinth, you back away this minute!" She called out, pushing through the tentative line of candidates. "Leave them be. You knew this day would come- you knew they'd have to hatch! Now let them, lest you endanger your very own children. You wouldn't want them to between, would you?" Sulky growls, and Lorinth retreated, allowing the candidates to get within range of the eggs.

Just in time, too, for two greens had burst shell just as their mother back away- the first, average of shade, glanced up to Lorinth, and trilled a musical tune of happiness, before scooting away torwards a pair of girls. The other green, of a slightly lighter color, followed quickly, but the darker got there first.

Palinde backed away a few steps at the sight of the green bounding torwards her, but smiled happily, tears in her eyes, at the first comment from her. "No, Yvaith, I think you're the diamond. I'm still pretty rough."

The other green, slightly lighter, planted her rear end firmly in the sand, staring at the other girl in the pair expectantly. Lekay hesitated, then ran forward to her. "Okay, okay, Dianth! You don't have to tell me twice!" Immersed in the blue-green of happiness in her new lifemate's eyes, she left the sands in a daze.

Another green, the same shade as the first, made a dazzling appearance- shards flew in all directions as a final blow broke the shell of her egg. She took a few tentative steps forward, but paused as the watchers as a whole took an intake of breath, as one of the two largest eggs began it's movement- she stalked over to inspect, sniffing experimentally at the shuddering shell. A piece fell out, and a talon ripped through the membrane, and a dragonet of a deep blue shade burst forward- but it was huge, the size of any decent brown at hatching.

Shaking his head to clear it of confusion, he greeted his sister - a fair size herself - with a touch of noses, and the pair quickly took off side by side, heading for a brother and sister pair watching with awe. Aidan reached for the green, while Kaidan the blue- they exchanged gleeful glances, their firelizards twirling ecstatic acrobats in the air above them. "Her name is Ceayrth," Aidan commented to her twin brother. "What's his?"

"Zdravoth." Aidan repeated the name, and nodded. "It's a good name." "So's Ceayrth. It suits you, and her." Wrapped in conversation between them, they left the sands- while eyes were following the large blue in interest, another, lighter blue had escaped unnoticed. He glanced torwards Serawna, but turned away just as quickly; passing her by and heading straight for Zernal; who had made an interesting entrance by being dropped to the sands by a passing blue. His knees felt weak, and he dropped to them- Whether from astonishment at impressing, or the rough landing, is uncertain. "I hurried, Bhalth! Really!"

When one of the average-sized eggs rocked, most of the audience payed no attention- for their eyes were on the remaining large egg, which most betted to have a brown within. Because of that, they were suprised when a light-shaded brown broke from a smaller egg, sinking into the deep drifts that had accumulated round his egg- plaintative creels rang 'bout the cavern, and Tyrenn heard them piercingly, deep within his mind.

"I'm coming, Cbarroth! Hold on, I'll help you out." With careful guiding hands, he led the young dragonet from the drifts, golden sand sticking to every inch of hide that had been submerged.

Two eggs remaining, and two candidates. The second of the larger eggs was the first to rock, but the other hatched quicker. A deeply shaded green, who completely ignored her larger sibling, making steady steps for the remaining female candidate. A decisive blow breaks the larger shell, and a blue head pokes out- another gigantic blue? Aqua-shaded forelimbs follow, and a green tail whips behind; Zenith's genes strike again.

This one's shading is different, however, and is not restricted to the wingsails. It flows from head to tail, and to the tips of his wings. The green saw her brother now, and stopped in her tracks- her choice is made, and Serawna reached for her happily. "Come on, Aalynth. I know you're hungry."

The blue/green blinked with astonishment at the bright light, taking a few clumsy steps- awkwardness has come along with his size, that of a brown. However, with one candidate left, both he and Delandir knew they were meant for each other. "Hurry up, Quaelynth! The boy called, waving him down. "I've been waiting for you!"

Lorinth still grumbled as the last of them left the sands, heading for the waiting weyrlingmasters. It's not fair. I spent a /lot/ of time taking care of those things- and now they're just /leaving/. Caylrie laughed, and patted the green affectionately. "Try not to worry, Lori. They're still struck with the astonishment of impressing- just like I was with you, and you were with me. They'll get over themselves, eventually."
