When T’ren woke up that morning it was roughly midday and the sounds coming from the kitchen and dining hall were drifting up the stairs and into his weyr. He sighed, realizing how hungry he was and then got out of bed. He put on a clean pair of pants, as well as a new tunic and then went into the room where his dragon lived. “Good morning Cbarroth,” he said sleepily as he walked up to his brown.

Cbarroth warbled and said, Good morning T’ren. The large brown got up from the couch and stretched his massive wings.

“Are you hungry?” T’ren asked.

Cbarroth warbled again and stretched his hind legs. I am so hungry I could eat three whole draft beasts and still have room for more!

T’ren laughed and said, “Well then let’s go down to the hunting grounds shall we?”

Cbarroth glided down slowly to the hunting grounds and landed without a sound. T’ren dismounted and patted his dragon on the shoulder before walking away and sitting in the grass. The brown took off and flew lazily over the herd. He plucked a large doe from the herd and then gained altitude, flying to one of the eating ledges.

T’ren looked around him and saw that the grounds were fairly crowded today. You are surprised why? It is almost midday and most riders come here then.

T’ren smiled and waved to his friend V’nan as he landed his brown Balaveth. He waved back and when he dismounted, walked over to him. “How’s it going?” V’nan asked.

T’ren shrugged. “Good I suppose. I got up about an hour ago and I’m still not seeing straight and I haven’t had a chance to eat either.”

V’nan laughed and said, “Well you’re just the complainer today aren’t you?”

T’ren smiled and said, “Yeah I guess I am. Hey I’m been meaning to ask you this, how’s Talie?”

V’nan frowned and said, “She left me last week. She didn’t even say goodbye.”

T’ren lowered his head and said, “I’m sorry to hear that. She seemed so happy with you though.”

V’nan nodded and said, “Yes she did, well while she was around other people.”

T’ren nodded in understanding and said, “Well if it helps any, I’ve been single for almost a year now.”

V’nan raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Really? I suppose that makes me feel better, though I’m not sure why.”

T’ren smiled and watched as Cbarroth dragged a medium sized buck away from the rest of the herd.

T’ren and V’nan sat in silence as they watched their dragons hunt. After Cbarroth finished his fourth and was about to go for another T’ren stood up. “Well I’ve got to go. I don’t want my brown lug getting any fatter than he already is.” V’nan smiled and watched as Balaveth picked a doe from the herd. “Cbarroth that’s enough,” he called as he walked towards his brown.

He rumbled slightly but landed by his rider. May I have another please? I am still hungry.

T’ren shook his head. “If you have another one you won’t be able to get your brown colored hide three inches off the ground.”

Cbarroth sighed and kneeled down so T’ren could mount. Yes I suppose you’re right. T’ren climbed up his dragon’s leg and sat between two of the neck ridges on his back. Cbarroth pushed lightly off the ground and flew back to their weyr.

Later that evening there was a knock on the door. T’ren looked up from his book and sighed, “Who could that be at this hour?” he marked where he was in the book and then got up, walking to the door. He opened it saw a young man with a tied scroll in his left hand. “Can I help you?” T’ren asked.

The man nodded. “Yes sir I believe you can. I’m a runner from Dawn Sisters Weyr and we’re in need of chasers for the flights. Here’s a list of the females rising,” he said as he handed T’ren the scroll. T’ren frowned but took the scroll anyway, ready to put it in the trash bin as soon as the young man left. “Thank you for your help,” the man said.

T’ren waved him off and then closed the door. After he had latched it he walked to the trash bin and held the scroll over it, deciding whether or not to throw it away. Why would you do that T’ren? It would be a good experience for me and I wouldn’t mind leaving Tiynarea Weyr for awhile to chase there.

T'ren sighed and walked into the other room. “It’s far away though, and we’ve never been there so we’d have to fly straight.”

Cbarroth grunted. So? It would help us learn new landmarks and such.

T’ren smiled and asked, “You really want to do this?” Cbarroth nodded once and T’ren unrolled the scroll. “Alright, let’s see who’s rising.”

An hour later after Cbarroth had finally decided on green Ranth’s flight, T’ren was putting his riding jacket on and mounting up. Cbarroth walked to the ledge slowly and then dove off, ceasing the dive almost instantly and then gaining altitude. He bugled to the watchdragon and then set off towards Dawn Sisters Weyr.

As they flew over the southern continent T’ren tired to take in as much as possible. It was hard however, because the ever-increasing darkness made it hard to see the details. They flew over the coastline and the brownrider smiled as he saw some dolphins leaping in front of a shrimp boat. Odd little creatures aren’t they? Cbarroth asked suddenly.

T’ren nodded. “Yes but I think they’re great. You know, the thought of being a dolphincrafter went through my head when I was younger.”

Cbarroth snorted. But you are glad you became a dragonrider correct?

T’ren nodded. “With all my heart yes.”

When they finally reached Dawn Sisters Weyr it was much lighter and T’ren began to get worried. “We didn’t leave that early did we Cbarroth?”

The brown laughed as much as a dragon can and then said, No we did not but as we traveled the times changed so we got here earlier then we left.

T’ren frowned and said, “See if I had been listening during my classes I would have known that.” Cbarroth warbled a hello to the resident watchdragon and then landed lightly in the Weyrbowl. T’ren dismounted and patted his dragon’s leg. “You stay here and I’ll find the charts. I’ll sign you up and then we’ll go see if there is a weyr open for us.”Cbarroth nodded and sat down.

T’ren walked towards the hatching sands and sure enough, right before the entrance the flight board was posted. He looked the board over, searching for Ranth’s name and when he found her he wrote Cbarroth’s name in one of the empty spots. “There that’s done,” he said to himself. “Now for that weyr.”
