Hatchling

“Morning Pin,” Varelli said as she walked into her dragons’ chambers.

The little green looked up and said, Good morning rider mine. I trust you slept well?

Varelli nodded and said, “Yes I suppose I did. Your thoughts troubled me however. What is wrong Pin?”

The hatchling shrugged and said, It is nothing for you to be concerned with Varelli. It will pass in a few days. Varelli nodded and decided not to pursue the subject any farther.

Varelli was quiet for a moment and then she asked, “Would you like to go down to the lake today? I’m sure you would like a bath and it would be good to get out of this weyr for once.” Giving the little green a bath wouldn’t be hard considering her size and she was sure that Cielo and Rame would like to help as well.

The green’s eyes lit up and she said, I would like that very much. I have been cooped up in this weyr for much too long. I long to see the sunlight.

Varelli smiled and said, “OK good, I was hoping that would be your answer. You don’t mind that Rame and Cielo come do you?”

The green cocked her head to one side and asked, Why would I?

Varelli smiled and said, “Just checking.” Pinrisoeth warbled and led the way towards the lake. Cielo and Rame flew after they walked out the door.

When they reached the lake a few other dragons from the same clutch as Pinrisoeth were there as well. “Who is that one Pin?” Varelli asked as she pointed to a small blue.

Pinrisoeth followed her riders’ gesture and looked the blue over. After a moment she said, That is Linronokith, his rider is Yriana.

Varelli nodded in recognition and said, “That is one of the male blues that took a female rider?”

Pinrisoeth looked at her rider as she waded into the water and said, Is there something wrong with a dragons’ choice?

Varelli followed her dragon into the water and began to scrub at the hatchlings’ neck. “No of course not. I just didn’t think that male dragons took female riders.”

Pinrisoeth snorted when Cielo got water in her nose and then said, It is fairly common actually. Female dragons also take male riders on occasion.

Varelli moved down to her shoulders and said, “Well I guess my teacher back at the Hold was right. You really do learn something new every day!”
