Weyrling

Varelli stretched her arms over her head and then plopped down into one of the large armchairs in her weyr. “I have never been so tired in my life,” she said to her two firelizards, Cielo and Rame, who had flown over to sit with her.

They chirped in sympathy and then curled up around her to sleep. Varelli was just about to do that same when Pinrisoeth’s voice filled her head. Can we go to the hunting grounds today rider-mine?

Varelli sighed and picked her lizards up, walking into her dragon’s chamber. As she opened the door she asked, “You want to fly down there after all the strenuous training you’ve just been through? You can’t wait a day at the most?”

The green warbled and said, But Varelli I am hungry now. I would only be hungrier tomorrow.

Varelli waved this fact away and set her firelizards down on the only chair that was in the room. They rumbled in annoyance but then curled up again and fell asleep. “Ok fine, let me change at least then ok? I feel disgusting.”

Pinrisoeth crooned and said, Do you think that we may be able to go to the lake after I eat? I would like to relax by the water, and I know you would too.

Varelli nodded and walked out the door again. “Yeah we’ll see how long it takes you to eat though ok? I don’t want to miss dinner again like last time,” she said.

When she walked back into the room, she found her dragon already on the ledge, waiting for her rider’s arrival. It took you long enough, Pinrisoeth said as she looked back at her rider.

Varelli smiled and said, “Sorry Pin, but I washed up a little too. I couldn’t go down to the grounds feeling the way I did.” The greenrider climbed to her mount’s back and then whistled, waking both lizards up. The warbled and flew towards her, knowing where they were going.

Pinrisoeth stepped to the edge of the ledge and then dove off, circling lazily towards the hunting grounds. She glanced over towards the lake and then said, There are a lot of dragons at the lake today Varelli.

She looked towards the lake and raised an eyebrow in surprise. The lake was so crowded that there was barely any beach let open. “It looks like it’s all the weyrlings from your clutch as well as the one before it.”

Pinrisoeth nodded mentally and said, That’s because it is all the dragons you speak of, minus a couple of course. She landed lightly then and allowed her rider time to dismount while she looked the herd over.

As soon as Varelli’s feet touched the ground Pinrisoeth took off again, flying low over the herd and plucking a medium sized doe from the midst of it. “Only three today alright Pin?” Varelli asked as she sat down, resting her back again the Weyr’s strong walls.

Pinrisoeth dragged her prize up to an eating ledge and said, Alright, but only because I wish to go to the lake today as well.

Varelli shrugged and stroked Rame as he nuzzled his way under the crook of her arm. “I don’t know about that Pin, I doubt it will clear out in an hour.”

Pinrisoeth looked up at her rider briefly from her ledge and then said, You never know. Perhaps they will be called off to do something, or they will come here.

Varelli shook her head in amusement, knowing her dragon was up to something. “Alright, well we’ll see after you’re finished alright. If it’s too close to dinner we’ll come out after I eat though ok?”

The green took off from the ledge, diving towards the herd and scattering it as she did so. She flew over them twice and then grabbed an extremely large buck who was stupid enough to get separated from the rest of the herd. That is fine rider-mine, Pinrisoeth answered simply as she struggled to fly back to the ledge, a tight hold on the frantic herdbeast.

Varelli closed her eyes, thankful for the time she would get to rest. The weyrling training had been very hard today, and she knew that she would be feeling this tomorrow. She only meant to rest for a moment but when she opened her eyes she found her dragon standing over her. “How long was I asleep?” She asked in surprise.

Pinrisoeth shrugged mentally and said, Only about an hour. I was going to have another one, but the grounds became too crowded so I decided against it.

Varelli nodded and stood up, looking up at the sky. “What time is it?” Rame warbled and she stroked him again, not really paying attention.

Pinrisoeth looked towards the weyrbowl and said, Blue Omertith says that his rider just went to dinner. They rang the bell a few minutes ago.

Varelli groaned and said, “Alright I’ll be back later. You go ahead to the lake, I’ll meet you there when I’ve finished eating ok?”

Pinrisoeth inclined her head, her versiojn of a nod, and then walked off towards the lake. Varelli watched her for a moment and then ran towards the dining hall. She was so hungry she could eat a whole wherry by herself.
