All the other riders are swimming with their dragons Varelli. Won’t you join me? The green called from the lake.
Varelli looked up from her book and frowned. “No,” she said plainly.
Pinrisoeth rumbled and said, You never want to come in. You would be much cooler if you came in considering you look like you’re perspiring just sitting there.
Varelli sighed and put her book down. “Pin I really don’t want to, maybe later ok?” She picked her book back up and ignored what her dragon said next.
You never want to come in, she repeated. Sighing, she swam away towards a large group of males.
The greeted her as she swam up and she returned it warmly. I’m Beileth, who are you? one of the blues asked her.
She looked him over, along with a few of the others and finally said, It is nice to meet you Beileth, I’m Pinrisoeth.
A large brown, one that Pinrisoeth had been eyeing, warbled and said, Pinrisoeth is a very pretty name. I am Excelith by the way.
Pinrisoeth inclined her head in greeting and was about to say something when her rider’s voice cut into her thoughts. Come here a second Pin, she said.
The green sighed said, I’m sorry I’ll be right back. My rider wishes to talk to me. She swam off, wondering what her rider wanted.
As she reached the greenrider Varelli stepped near the shore and said, “Get out of the water Pin, we're leaving.”
The green warbled in confusion and asked, I'm sorry Varelli, but I wasn't flirting, honest. And since I wasn't flirting can we stay longer?
Varelli raised an eyebrow and said, “We’re not leaving because you were flirting Pin, and we’re not just leaving the lake. I wish to transfer to a different Weyr, if that’s alright with you.”
Pinrisoeth crooned and said, I would like to transfer Varelli. That would be fun. Which Weyr were you thinking about?
Varelli sat by the edge of the lake and said, “Well I was thinking about Tiynarea Weyr. I heard they needed dragons there, and it’s located in the southern continent but by the shore of the ocean. What do you think?”
The green climbed out of the water and asked, When do we leave?
Varelli laughed, something she didn’t do often, and said, “We can leave as soon as I get my things together.”
Pinrisoeth lifted her leg so her rider could mount and then took off, flying for their weyr.
Later that day they left for Tiynarea. Varelli sent the image of the Weyr’s heights, in front of the clear southern ocean water. Pinrisoeth bugled and then winked between.
As they came out of between Pinrisoeth bugled again, greeting the watchdragon, who looked up and bugled back. Do you think that the weyrwoman will allow us to stay? Pinrisoeth asked as she circled the Weyr, getting a good look at everything.
Varelli shrugged and said, “I don’t see why not but we’ll have to find her and the weyrleader just to make sure." She looked down below her and said, “Look at how clear the water is here Pin, it will be nice to bathe in that don’t you think?”
The green crooned and said, Yes I would enjoy that immensely. You don’t think they also have a lake though do you? I don’t see one near the Weyr at all.
Varelli looked around the Weyr as her dragon circled it again and said, “I don’t know, I don’t see one either.” After a moment she pointed down to a clearing and said, “land down there Pin, in that clearing near the weyr entrance.”
Pinrisoeth did as her rider said and followed her into the bowl after she had dismounted. I wonder if we will be permitted to join a wing or if we will be told to wait.
Varelli looked back at her dragon in surprise and said, “I thought you wanted to lay a clutch before you started flaming. Have you changed your mind?”
Pinrisoeth shook her head slightly and said, No, I have not. It would just be a good way to get to know the area around the Weyr.
Varelli nodded in understanding and continued walking through the weyrbowl. After a while she stopped a young man and asked, “Do you know where I can find the weyrleader? I’m interested in transferring here.”
He smiled slightly and said, “The former weyrleader passed. Gold Kandrith, that’s the senior queen, she’s set to rise but there is no weyrleader currently. I could tell you where you could find Sarliyn though if that helps.”
Varelli nodded and said, “Yes that would be a big help.”
The man pointed down a hallway and said, “She’ll most likely be down that hall and to the left. There is a large double door, made of skybroom. That’s the entrance to the hatching sands. She spends most of her free time there, making sure everything is going well with the clutches etc.”
Varelli thanked the man and then turned to Pinrisoeth. “You stay here while I go talk to the weyrwoman ok?”
Pinrisoeth crooned and sat down on her haunches, waiting, while her rider walked down the hallway and disappeared into the shadows.
Varelli reached the large doors and pulled them open, causing a warm blast of air to escape. She pulled her hair back and then stepped onto the sands, walking quickly towards the stands.
When she was halfway across them a large gold rumbled and looked right at her. Varelli stopped in her tracks, looking back at the queen. She gasped as the heat of the sand penetrated her boots and then dashed to the cooler stands.
She sat down in one of the chairs, looking around the sands to see if the weyrwoman was there. However, the only other being that seemed to be in there with her was the gold, who was still staring her down. She was becoming very uncomfortable and was thinking of leaving when the big skybroom doors opened again.
A young woman walked in, greeted the queen and was about to walk towards her when she spotted Varelli sitting in the stands. Smiling, she walked over to her, pulling her hair back as well. “Good afternoon. If you wish to stand for Morjarth’s clutch the rules and form are over on that table there,” she said as she pointed to a table on the side of the stands.
Varelli shook her head and said, “Actually, I’m from Cincanta Weyr. My dragon Pinrisoeth and I were interested in transferring here. I’m here because someone told me I could find you here, if you’re the weyrwoman that is.”
The woman nodded and said, “I’m Sarilyn, and they did right to direct you here. I’ve spent so many hours on these sands as of late. Anyway, you’re more than welcome to transfer. We have quite a few weyrs open I’m sad to say. Let me see which ones are open, follow me.” She walked from the sands briskly, Varelli following, happy to leave the hot sands behind.
Sarilyn led Varelli back through the hallway she had come and then entered one of the side doors. She turned the wall glow up and then looked through some papers. After a few minutes she smiled and said, “Alright I’ve got a 4B and a 2I, whichever you prefer.”
Varelli looked at her in confusion and asked, “I’m sorry but I don’t understand. Weyrs were assigned differently at Cincanta.”
Sarilyn laughed and said, “Yes silly me. Ok your number is the level and the letter is the actual weyr. We have say twenty levels and there’s twenty-four weyrs to each level. Make sense?”
Varelli nodded and asked, “So the higher number would mean a higher level?” Sarilyn nodded so Varelli said, “well I guess the 4B then.”
Sarilyn nodded and placed the sheet of hide back among the others. “Ok let me show you where that is,” she said as she walked from the room. “Where is your dragon by the way?” She asked as the got into the bowl.
Varelli pointed to her green, who was still sitting in the same spot, currently looking over at a fairly large blue who was standing with his rider near the mating flight board.
Are we permitted to stay? Pinrisoeth asked as she shifted her gaze to her rider.
Varelli nodded and said, “Yes we are Pin. Come along, the weyrwoman is going to show us where our new weyr is.”
The green warbled happily and got up, following her rider and the weyrwoman to her new home.
