Gustav Klimt: Pallas Athena

In January 1999 a few interested individuals decided to pursue the search for intelligent philosophical life outside the varsities’ lecture halls as we have grown accustomed to it in South Africa.

Our search had been stimulated by the realisation that changing conditions in Southern Africa demand a fresh approach. We remain to be inspired by the growth of philosophical consultation practices and societies in Europe, the Americas and other countries; and we are driven by the belief that philosophy has more to offer than good academic degrees.

We made contact with philosophical practitioners internationally, which helped our own ideas to take shape. All indications confirmed our view that a Southern African association was called for and so we persisted with our efforts. Ultimately a draft constitution saw the light and was accepted at the founding meeting of our group in June 2000.

We are currently making contact with others in SA who have been doing philosophy-related consultation on their own for some time.

Our group met again in Pretoria on 6-8 October 2000 for a workshop at which we have finalised our Constitution and Code of Conduct. Read more about this workshop.

We generally support the notion that there should continue to be a close collaboration between "book philosophy" as taught at academic institutions, and "practical philosophising", as performed in various contexts of consultation.

Philosophical Consultation.

Some of the main areas of Philosophical Consultation are:

Socratic Dialogue (group facilitation), Philosophical Counselling

(individual counselling),

Philosophy with Children

(esp. in educational settings),

Management Philosophy (e.g., Business Ethics).
