January - February 2002 NEWS!

Of course, the big story of January & February is the 2002 Winter Olympics, here in our city!  It is so exciting to watch the preparations (though occasionally aggravating as traffic becomes impossible downtown due to road closures and/or lane reductions).  But it is a small price to pay to welcome the world here.  Click here to see photos showing the city's preparations.

What is Tammy doing about her regular work?

Tammy is taking 2 weeks off from her regular job at Salt Lake Theological Seminary to volunteer at the E Center.

What will she be doing as a volunteer?

She will be doing various jobs there, including usher, ticket-taker, spectator marshal (holding a large megaphone and telling people where to go), mag & bag (searching bags and also checking people through the magnetometer (you know, that metal detector you walk through in the airport)), and possibly some other jobs as well.  She has 14 work shifts during Feb 9-24, and is scheduled to work almost 130 hours!!!

What is Loren going to do?

Loren will still be working part-time at the seminary to make more improvements to their database, as he has moved into the next phase of that project.  He will probably not get much done on his master's degree project during the 2 weeks of the Olympics, because the traffic to drive there will be horrendous.

What events will we see?

Tammy's brother Alex is coming to visit during the Games, and Tammy, Loren and Alex are going to see lots of exciting events.  On Feb. 13th, they will see men's curling and women's luge finals.  On Feb. 14th, they are going to nordic combined ski jumping and the men's figure skating free skate.  (Those 2 days are the only ones Tammy has off from her volunteer duties).

The next week, on February 20th, Tammy doesn't have to work until 5 pm, so Tammy & Loren are going to see men's & women's skeleton finals.  On February 23rd, after Tammy's shift is over at 4:30, they are going to see short track speed skating.

What else are we going to do?

Loren is going to watch a lot of events on TV, and Tammy hopes to catch as much as she can.  Good thing we have a VCR...

Tammy is writing a diary of her Olympic experiences.  Check it out!
