How to get there?
There is a Hulu Yam Baharu and
a Hulu Yam lama. The Hulu Yam Lama is just a stone throw away from
Federal Highway Route 1. If you choose this way then proceed another 8
kilometers towards the hills to reach Hulu Yam Baharu. From there go
straight on until the end of the paved road.
Just north of
village center, there is a junction going back to Kuala Lumpur via Selayang, Batu Caves. Past this
junction and then to village's edge, a 5 kilometers dirt
road, runs into the forest reserve.
Of course you can also come from Selayang, pass Sungei Tua and to meet up at the junction. Then follow
the signage.
From the "T" junction,
go inland. After the sign showing the direction to the Asli village,
don't turn just drive straight on. This 5 kilometers road is now paved
half the way. At the end of which, the
road is no longer passable as the wooden bridge no longer support
vehicular traffic. A permanent concrete bridge in under construction in
December 2007. Park your car there and cross the bridge. Up a gentle
slope for 20 meters, on your left, the Sendat Waterfall
What would I recommend ?
Again,
this is one destination that I would advise you to avoid week ends. The
crowd is simply too big. The road may be broken but suitable for all
class of small sedan. Just go slowly.
After the
broken bridge and up the slope, instead of turning left to the picnic or
waterfall area, walk another few meters. There should be another opening
to your right and then a huge picnic area. This the part where the heavy
4X4 club members come for the weekend escape. They would enjoy the river
on the right and even on weekend, this place is less crowded and more
tolerable. |

The Main Waterfall.

The place
This is
a much talked about but also well concealed waterfall. When the folks
outside Hulu Yam talks about the Hulu Yam Waterfalls, they invariably
ended up with the more exposed Sungei Tua Waterfalls. This is because this Sungei Tua waterfall could be
seen, just
beside the inland Selayang to Hulu Yam country road. Anyway, just see
that part of "How to get there"
Some where
to the waterfall, about 2 kilometers in, a housing project breaks
the wilderness of this place. In substitute, that part of the
laterite road is now well paved.
The
good broad dirt road, some parts wee bit rough, ends at a bridge. It is the confluence of 2 rivers flowing down from Gunong Bunga Buah. No choice but to
leave their car before the wooden bridge. From 1st July 2007, a couple
of officers from the Forestry Department are stationed before the
bridge to collect entrance fees. In the meantime, a concrete bridge
is hastily prepared. cross the river using a temporary bridge and up
the short slope.
The first and largest fall
[above] will greet you immediately. A 15 meters cascade down a near
vertical slope.
It is a very easy
walk to the top of this
first waterfall.
From the top, you will get a good view of the
pool. The pool itself, is clean. Has a round shape reaching over a meter deep at a point near to
the base where the water drop. The picnic area and pool is well
shaded, almost the whole day. This makes this destination ideal,
supplemented with fresh and very cold water.
The second Waterfall is a replica
of the first fall but much
smaller, just over 3 meters tall. Few picnickers will hike up to this
2nd waterfall. The reason - could be that the flat surfaces for
resting area at this 2nd waterfall is too confined. Most picnickers
prefer the company of large crowd. Places where they can all be accommodated
is the top choice. Sheds are provided on the forested area for the
crowd to disperse, acting as an alternative. Beyond these 2 waterfalls, there are other
cataracts - minor ones and river trekking is fun in this gentle
terrain. One negative point though, the
town council has provided sheds for shelter and places for rubbish,
most picnickers do not keep the place clean. |
