Oil Paintings

Espaņol

These are oil paintings made in gold, silver or aluminum leaves, in an ancient technique known as gilding, which consists of covering a surface with very thin leaves of the metal and then painting on it. The original surface can be flat, bas relief, or 3 dimensional. The gilding, or metal covering, allows for very rich and brilliant transparencies of the layers of oil painting. This technique has always been widely used for icon painting, and religious and decorative motifs.

Parrots

A small sized work with lots of detail. The two parrots are in gold foil, and the background is aluminum. Bas relief.

Here is a couple of pre-hispanic motifs :

Eagle

20 x 27 cms.

Could this be Quetzalcoatl ? Eagle body is in silver, background is aluminum.

Bas relief.

Merchant

20 x 27 cms. aprox.

A man selling his product at the marketplace. From the mixteca culture. Oil on aluminum.

Road to Heaven

35 x 45 cms.

Oil painting on aluminum foil. Bas relief.

I like this one. Simple, colorful and straight forward. One of my favourites.

Sun and Moon masks

These are a couple of Haitian voodoo masks that I found in an old pile of trash in the attic, where they had been gathering dust for a long while. They were pretty damaged and in bad shape. I recovered and restored them, then covered with faux gold and faux silver and painted them. Now they are like brand new. They are male and female, sun and moon, gold and silver.

Flying eagle                                           25 x 60 cms.

This is a bas relief in ceramic, covered with aluminum and oil painted. I like the rich textures and colors of the background.
