Timeline

 

This is a timeline as I have been able to piece together.  If anyone has any additional information regarding missing elements or  errors, PLEASE feel free to E-mail me..Thank you…..Terry

      1943          Formed as one of the first “Nightfighter” units in the Army Air force.  Trained in Florida and then

moved to Scorton, England in May.  Flying British “Beaufighters”.  Deployed later in the year to Algeria

      1944          Moved to LeVallons, France.  Moved again to St. Dizier, France and later in the year to           

                        Giebelstadt, Germany

1945                    Converts to P-61 Black Widow aircraft

1946                    De-activates.

1952          Activates at Clovis AFB, New Mexico, flying the P-51 Mustang

1953          Hahn Air Base, Germany.  Part of the 50th TFW along with the 10th TFS and the 81st TFS.  Lt. Col. Chuck Yeager Commander.  F-86 Sabre Jet

 

     1956           Moves to Toul-Rosieres Air Base, France.  Lt. Col. Last year as Commander

     1958           The 50th begins to transition to the F-100D Super Sabre

 

     1959           Moves to Ramstein Air Base, Germany but remains part of the 50th TFW

     1966           Transitions to the Phantom F-4D Fighter

     1968           Moves to Mt. Home AFB, Idaho as part of “Crested Cap”, assigned to the 67th TRW while in the states but still part of the 50th.

     1969           Rotates to Hahn for 3 months as part of Crested Cap

     1970           Transfers to Holloman AFB, New Mexico as part of the 49th TFW

     1972           Moves to Takhli RTAFB, Thailand with the 49th TFW, May 1972 to Oct. 1972

     1972           Back to Holliman

     1973           417th inactivated

     1978           417th activates

     1982           Assigned to the 86th TFW at Ramstein AB, Germany.  F-16’s

     1989           Assigned 35th TFW, activated as the 417th TFTS, F-117’s

1993                      The 417th was deactivated and redisgnated as the 7th Fighter Squadron
