Curriculum is purchased and selected by the parent, there are no tuition costs, you don't have to purchase school clothing, and the student gets individual one-on-one attention from you! The Christian influence is coming totally from the parent, which to many families, is extremely important.
Disadvantages: Homeschooling, however, is not for everybody. The parent must be willing to sacrifice 3-5 hours of time each day to teach the child. Quality time must be set aside for this. You must be a patient individual and you must like both your child and teaching! Sometimes working with your own child is difficult, especially if he/she is not particularly teachable. Sometimes a headstrong child will do better with a different authority figure.
The cost of homeschooling may be a little more than you expect, so you must plan ahead. If you have to stop working outside the home in order to homeschool, you may lose a significant income. Curriculum can be extremely costly, especially if you buy all the manipulatives, maps, etc. that you need to teach the curriculum effectively. Extra activities, such as music, sports, art, etc., must be provided by the parent, and if you don't happen to be particularly talented in these areas, you must be able to pay for someone to teach these skills to your child.
You will need to research curriculum and support groups. This can be accomplished by the use of many Christian homeschool associations and web pages available to assist you. Crosswalk has many helpful features for parents involved in homeschool education. In addition, many churches have support groups for parents who homeschool.
