Tuggerah Lakes Memorial Sailing Club at Long Jetty hosted the Easter Long weekend 14 ft Catamaran Sailing Regatta. The sailing was held on the Saturday and Sunday allowing for leisurely long distance travelling on the Friday and Monday.

Tuggerah Lake was showered in a sun blizzard with winds gusting 3-5 knots. Thus ensuring the clubs flotilla of rescue craft were greatly under employed. This however did not make for uninteresting racing. The twenty boats that attended were divided into three classes. Paper Tigers, Arrows and a miscellaneous class which consisted of Windrush, Hobie14’s and Gliders.

Saturday morning saw the start of race one, it was a slow drifter with the lightest winds of the regatta and the lead dominated by the Tigers with Kevin Kay (Long Jetty) taking the lead and Anthony Williams (Wagga Wagga) chomping closely on his heals. The afternoon saw three back to back races set on a short course. With steadier north east winds picking up to 4 knots, Arrow sailors Frank O’Rourke and Jason Brazel taking turns at snatching back the lead from Kevin Kay.

Racing over, the sailors flocked to the club for some country style home cooking marinated steaks sumptuous salads and trifles for desert. Morning tea and early lunch took the place of postponed racing on Sunday morning till the afternoon breeze crept in. Three back to back races in the afternoon with some close racing between Frank O’Rourke (Arrow), Wayne Eager (Paper Tiger), Daniel Johnston (Hobie 14), Janica Marcovitch (Glider), Anthony Williams (Paper Tiger), Kevin Kay (Paper Tiger).

14 ft sailors need to be commended on making learner sailors welcome in their fleet. Long Jetty sailing school student James Brander sailed his first three races at the regatta on his brand new Paper Tiger. James improved with each race and in the last race finished in a close tussle with Desmond Collins the TLMSC Long Jetty Club Captain.

Thankyou to all those sailors who travelled to make the regatta a great success we look forward to a large turnout for our Brass Monkey regatta held on the 9th 10th and 11th of June 2001.
