Some information about Peter Beagle
His first two novels, The Last Unicorn and A Fine and Private Place, have remained in print since publication. Both have been hailed as classics. The Last Unicorn was made into a successful animated film in 1982 and the stage adaptation was produced at the Intiman Theatre in Seattle in 1988. A Fine and Private Place is currently being adapted into both a film and a musical play. His works have been translated into 15 languages.
In addition to Peter Beagle's work as a novelist, he has produced nonfiction, and had short fiction, articles, and forewords printed in a variety of publications dating back to the mid 1950's. His non-fiction credits are acclaimed through: In the Presence of Elephants, The Lady and Her Tiger, The Garden of Earthly Delights, and The California Feeling; as are his short fiction articles such as Come, Lady Death, Atlantic; My Daughter's Name is Sarah, Ladies Home Journal; and The Naga, After the King. Furthermore, forewords printed in The Tolkien Reader, by J.R.R. Tolkien; The Adventures of Yemima, by Abraham Soyer; and Adventures in Unhistory, by Avram Davidson; and srticles such as D.H. Lawrence in Taos, Holiday and On Being the Man of the House, Saturday Evening Post, make up just a smattering of his prolific and accomplished writing history.
Beagle is also a musician, singer and songwriter. A live album of songs was issued in 1991 and between 1973 and 1985 he performed weekly at the club L'Oustalou in Santa Cruz, California. He is a regular on the university circuit where he gives readings, lectures, and concerts.
He recently co-edited (with Janet Berliner) an anthology of original stories entitled Peter S. Beagle's Immortal Unicorn, and has written the text for In the Presence of Elephants, a book of photographs by Gennaro Molina. A collection of six novellas is scheduled for release in 1997 and he is presently at work on a novel.
