Obituary:

NEW MEXICO - Silver City "Independent", 26 November, 1918:
PIONEER SETTLER OF MIMBRES RIVER DEAD
"One of Grant County's original pioneers, and the first white settler to the Mimbres river section, E. J. Swarts (Edward James Swarts aka Swartz, census records Swats/Swatts), died last Thursday at his home at Swarts, following a brief illness. Mr. Swarts had apparently recovered from a severe attack of influenza and was able to be about, but suffered a relapse which resulted in his death.

Old-timers throughout this part of New Mexico will learn with genuine regret of the death of Mr. Swarts. He was known by everyone in the Mimbres section, where he was postmaster since a post office was established there in the early 80's, and also operated a store. His ranch is one of the finest in this part of the state and he set a
splendid example for all his neighbors in this fertile agriculture and fruit growing region.

Born in Illinois 63 years ago, Mr. Swarts came to New Mexico about 44 years ago and his home had been here ever since. He took up land on the Mimbres river and the town of Swarts was named after him. He was a Republican in politics and in 1902 was elected county assessor, serving for one term. He later served several terms on the board of county commissioners.

Surviving him are a widow, four sons and eight daughters, together with 23 grandchildren. The funeral was held Friday at the family home, burial being in a family plot on the ranch of the deceased. C. G. Bell, of this city, an intimate friend of Mr. Swarts, was present at the funeral which was attended by hundreds of people from up and down the Mimbres river, all of whom took this opportunity to pay a last tribute to one whom they had known and respected in life.

(Note: wife of "Jim" Swarts was Camilla Leyba, daughter of Jose "Luz" Leyba aka Luz Leyba aka Jose De La Luz Leiva, and probably Geronima Talabera, both born in Santa Cruz, Rosales, Chichuahua, Mexico, 1828 & 1833).
