Molly pushed through the saloon doors letting her eyes adjust to the dimmer light inside. She moved through the room to a table near the back where Lily sat. It was mid-morning and the room was nearly empty.
"Good morning Lily."
"Good morning, cher. Please join me." Molly sat down next to her and sighed heavily. "What's wrong Molly?"
"I don't know. I guess I was just thinking about Bryn." Lily reached out and squeezed Molly's hand.
"I know. I miss her too." It had only been two days since Bryn had left but her leaving had left a void. Lily had realized till she was gone how much she'd become accustomed to Bryn's singing at night. "We're not the only ones who miss her." Lily nodded toward Ezra who sat alone shuffling a deck of cards.
Bryn had returned from her ordeal seemingly uninjured but had quickly withdrawn from everyone. She was only back for a few days before she announced that she was leaving town. Ezra had tried to stop her, telling her that he would protect her and that her captor wouldn't hurt her again. She tried to play the incident off, saying that her kidnaping had nothing to do with her decision. She reminded Ezra that she had originally been on her way to Denver when she'd stopped in Four Corners. She was just going to continue on her journey a little sooner than she'd thought. She'd wired her friend Tamara to expect her.
"She promised she'd write." Molly said the statement more to make herself feel better than anything else.
"I'm sure she will, cher. I know that you meant a lot to her. She treasured the time you spent together."
"Lily," Molly wasn't sure how to approach her next question, "I was in the general store earlier and some of the women were there and they were talking. . ." Her voice trailed off hesitantly.
"Yes?"
"Well, they were saying that the man who kidnaped Bryn . . . that he . . . um . . . did things to her." Lily looked away from Molly's eyes. "Do you think its true? I mean, did she, did she tell you anything?"
Lily sighed, unsure how to answer the young girl's question. Bryn had told Lily bits and pieces about what had happened, but some details she had kept to herself. It had been obvious to Lily that some details were too painful for Bryn to speak.
"You needn't worry yourself about things like that. You're much too young to think of such terrible things. Please don't listen to what those women gossip about. Okay?"
Molly nodded slowly. "It's just that I. . ." Her voice dropped low and quiet and her eyes clouded over. Memories swirled around her of a night not so long ago that she couldn't forget.
"Cher? What is it? What's wrong?" Lily didn't like the look in her young friend's eyes. It scared her. She'd seen that look before on another young woman's face.
"Nothing. I'm fine." Molly swallowed back the memories.
