Chapter 53

Days had passed as the trial dragged on. Judge Travis sat behind the bench, his brow furrowed as he listened to the testimony of a family that claimed to have been set upon by KC’s crew. Silence filled the courtroom for a moment before his tired eyes scanned the room taking note of the full house, and curious on lookers. "Thank you, miss. Hollyfeld," Travis announced, "you may step down."

The charges piled up against KC, but the fact still remained that she had deflected the notions and desires of her companions. He had watched the young woman as she sat stoic in her place. Almost as though she were in another place. "Miss. Jenson," KC’s eyes shot up staring at the judge in wide eyed terror. Surprised gasps echoed through the room, Travis stopped for a moment locked in a stare with KC. "Miss. Jenson, would you please rise."

KC stood slowly, her movements echoed in them the uneasiness she felt. "Would you please state your birth name for the court," Travis asked looking over the top of his glasses.

KC fidgeted for a moment. "KC Jenson," she stated looking Travis in the eye.

"Miss Jenson," Travis warned her.

"Kassandra Colette Jenson," she sounded less than pleased to say it.

"Thank you, now do you have anything to say in your defense? And remember your under oath."

"No, sir."

Travis tilted his head, his eyes questioning, "Do you have anything to say at all?"

"Judge, I shot the stagecoach driver and shotgun rider. I was also present at the Hollyfeld ranch. Along with the attempt to steal the gold shipment from the bank ..."

"Miss Jenson, Captain McCatney states that you knew that the gold shipment was elsewhere is this true?"

"Yes, sir."

"So, why did you proceed to attempt to steal something that wasn’t there," Travis asked, KC only shrugged, "Why did you try, when you knew there was no point?"

"Peg-Leg and Jesse needed a lesson."

"Why didn’t you try and escape with them, when you helped them escape?"

"If I would have gone with them, Molly would have been drug along. If I hadn’t of brought Molly with me, they would have shot me. They were already seeing me as a liability."

"Well in light of the testimony from both Capt. McCatney and yourself. There seems to be no way in which we can convict you of robbery. You are hereby, released into your own recognizance," Travis banged his gavel against the desk, "Court is dismissed."

KC stared at the judge quietly as Larabee removed the hand shackles. "You're trouble, Miss Jenson," he warned her.

The townspeople slowly meandered out of the trial room to go back to their regular daily lives. Turning to leave, KC caught sight of a stranger. A woman who watched the judge and those law type men, intently. She shifted her gaze and found Lily, Molly, and the boy. He, reminded her of Hardin, yet so much softer and less angry at the world.
