After the dutch reclaimed New York in 1673, they renamed it New Orange, in honor of William of Orange, who ordered the invasion to reclaim New Amsterdam.
The English chased the Dutch forever in 1674 and re-renamed it New York, in honor of Charles II's brother, James Duke of York.
In an odd twist of fate William of Orange, would rule England as half of William and Mary. They were asked to sieze the crown from Mary's father, the disastrous King James II.
