There are many recycled 1800's mansions that were converted into inexpensive hotels in NYC.
Dormitory sleeping can be had for about 20 dols a night.

Here is a photo of the Sugar Hill Hostel.
Again a recycled 1800's mansion.
Private bedrooms with hall bath generally cost 30 to 40 dols a night.

Here is a photo of the Gershwin Hotel.
As you can guess this is a huge recycled mansion. It is just off Fifth and was built around 1900 by one of the Vanderbilts. It had sixty rooms and twenty dormitory rooms in the attic for the staff.
This hotel is much more expensive but still less than 150 dols a night.
