Three Rabbits

(a modern-day fable)

Not a long while ago in a green, grassy meadow near a river there lived
three rabbits, one named Jason, the other Robert, and the last Tim.
The three rabbits were very good friends. Jason and Robert lived
together in a rabbit burrow near downtown meadow, while Tim lived with
Mama and Papa rabbit out near the edge of the meadow. Everything was
lovely.

Then one day everything changed.

Jason had been dating a quiet, white rabbit named Sally. She was
uncomfortable around Tim and Robert, especially Tim, and she didn't
really fit with Jason, so they seemed bound to fail. And they did.

At the same time, Robert started dating a rabbit friend of Jason's
named Nancy. This came out of the blue for Jason and Tim, since Robert
and Nancy on first glance didn't appear to be compatible.

Conflict developed, as could have been expected:

Jason, having ended a relationship recently, couldn't help but feel a
bit jealous of Robert's newfound happiness.

Robert, basking in the sunshine of newfound love, couldn't help but be
oblivious to the hurt feelings Jason's breakup had caused in him.

Tim, standing in the middle between his two rabbit friends, couldn't
help but grow sadder and sadder watching his two best rabbits grow
farther and farther apart.

Still the conflict grew and grew.

Tim was a bit of a quiet rabbit who liked all his rabbit friends to get
along and have fun. He liked going and eating plants at Jason and
Robert's burrow. He didn't want to take sides, so he didn't say
anything. But with Jason and Robert not getting along, and Jason,
Robert, and Tim not having any fun, Tim decided not to go eat plants at
Jason and Robert's burrow anymore.

Jason and Robert eventually realized what silly rabbits they had been
and made up.

It was too late for Tim, though - he had left the green, grassy meadow
near the river and hopped north to a larger meadow, the one near the
lake.

And so the three rabbits weren't very good friends anymore.
