The green light is something mentioned throughout the
book. It was a very
important symbol to Gatsby. The
light was on Daisy’s dock, and it was Gastby’s was of knowing that
Daisy was close to him. Even
though she was across the lake, he could still see the green light.
Gatsby’s tries to reach out to the green light from his dock,
but he cannot reach it. Gatsby
thinks that the only way he can achieve all of the dreams, including
Daisy, is to buy them. What
he doesn’t realize, is that as he is trying to buy expensive things
and throw great parties, he is slowly getting farther and farther away
from Daisy and all of the other things he ever wanted in life.
He smothers himself with all of his material things, that they
don’t even affect him anymore. His
obsession with trying to go back to the past makes him loose sight of
the things in the present that really matter.
He is keeping himself in the past, and as he stays there, he
loses sight of the future.
