Night

Daisy sat at home after hearing the news of Gatsby’s demise.  She wept softly and stared quietly out into the night.  Slowly Daisy crept downstairs, as not to wake Tom, and went out the door.  She walked around to her backyard and stood on the dock, next to the green light.  The sound was engulfed in black, and she couldn’t hear any noise except the soothing lapping of the water on the shore.  She wished so badly that she was on the other side of the sound staring across the water with Gatsby.

All Daisy could do was look through the darkness at a life she could have lived, and feel empty inside.  Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulder that shocked her.  She spun around and Nick was standing there, looking sadly into her eyes.  He had decided to tell her everything.  He told her about the lady she hit, and his husband, Gatsby’s murderer.  He told her about how Tom had told Wilson that it was Gatsby’s car that hit Myrtle.  She said nothing for a long time, but her face expressed everything.  She slowly turned to Nick, and placing her hand in his said, “We need to leave.”  Nick expected her to say this, and slowly they walked away together into the night.
