Comment- story

I liked “The Great Gatsby” a lot.  It was fun with all the symbolism and the hidden meanings that I never would have got without the help of a wonderful teacher.

I thought the plot was well planned out and the characters were great.

I thought it was interesting how Fitzgerald made so many different meanings for ordinary words and phrase in the story.  The symbolism of the east and west thought the story was a big part. The way east meant the beginning; rebirth and so forth and the way west meant the end and death.  The symbolism of the egg in the East and West Egg was used to show the significance of life in the story.  The egg was used as a sign of new life and rebirth.  It was a symbol of the life the thrived in the east and that had left the west.

Most of the story revolved around incidents and accidents.  Myrtle and Gatsby’s deaths were both accidents that could have been prevented.  The accidents were the twists in the story that mixed things up to make them interesting.  Myrtle’s death was more important to the plot than to the meaning of the story, but Gatsby’s death was crucial to the meaning of the story (not to chase material items with our lives).
