Betrayed (commentary) |
One of the main themes in the novel is betrayal (sex,
lies, and scandal). Tom was cheating on Daisy with Myrtle and
Daisy cheated on Tom with Gatsby. Everyone knows that Tom is
cheating except for Daisy. This is because nobody wants to tell
her. Nick knows a secret about both of them; he knows they are
both cheating on each other, and if he was a good friend, he would've
told the other one. He betrays them both by keeping it a
secret. He doesn't tell either one of them. It's ironic though,
how in the end, Tom and Daisy run away with one another. Maybe
they were in love after all. Maybe they needed to think they were
out of love to realize they were in love.
