Gatsby's life can be compared to a dream.  Ever since the moment he kissed Daisy he has been trying to live a dream.  Even the moment of the first kiss has a dream like quality.  This one moment Gatsby experienced so many years before has become the one moment Gatsby lives for.  He has dedicated his life to Daisy, while she has moved on and married another man.  After Gatsby's confrontation with Tom in the hotel room, his dream seems to be completely shattered.  Reality sets is and he knows that Daisy isn't his.
