This painting is the one referred to by Nick in the
passage. The painting brings out a dark side about which Nick is
referring to by " at once conventional and grotesque, crouching
under a sullen, overhanging sky and lustreless moon." Nick is
describing the conformity and underlying darkness that seems to
capture the people and West Egg. The painting itself, has wonderful use
of color. The dark blues and greens, pop out of the painting. I find it
interesting that the little village, is painted in the grays. It's
almost as if the town consists of dark forces and nature is a reflection
of that. The sky, with it's swirling blues, appears to be thundering, as
if maybe troubled by the village.
